Just pulled the trigger on a 3.5 model. I did some homework before buying an it seems as though the reel is what I am looking for in the realm of value and high performance. Does anyone have "reel" world experience with this reel or even the Velocity with a conical drag?

anadromous,

How's that Konic 3.5 working out for you.

I'm ready to pull the trigger on a new reel and have narrowed it down to the Lamson Kronic or the Orvis Battenkill Large Arbor Trout reels. Your (or anyone else's) input would be greatly appreciated.

I 've been using a Lamson Velocity 2.0 for 8 years now and consider it a fantastic value. The way the drag system is made, gives you the ability to "dial-in" the feel you like.

I looked at a Lamson Konic 2 in BassPro the other day. I noticed that there was slight movement in the reel and a lot of movement in the drag adjustment knob. This was a brand new reel in the display counter. This concerned me, if there's movement in the shop ...... ?

Has anyone else noted this?

I was playing around with a 3.5 over the weekend.   Seemed perfectly smooth to me.

I will say this...it is the smoothest, most confidence inspiring drag I have ever used. It is a fantastic reel. My only concern is the pressure cast build process...but I knew that going in and that is why you get a $400 dollar drag system in a $150 dollar reel...but if if it breaks I can buy 3 of these to one machined reel. I will take my chances and enjoy function over form on this one...although it is s till pretty sweet to look at.

I was thinking about getting a 4 for my spey rod but durabililty is a concern.  The 4 is 8 ounces which is about perfect for what I'm after.  And $150 will keep me married, $400 may not.
