Buddy & I had a very good day with trout today at the lake. First time in over 30 yrs. that I fished there, really is too small for my taste but was a nice change of pace. Was surprised that some bass & gills were still on the nest. After bringing in a 8" golden shiner on a beadhead nymph I tossed it in front of a big female bass that was on a nest, she had previously passed up a couple of gills, she came right after that shiner, I lost her after a few seconds but after I tried again she engulfed it & this time the size 14 hook came out of the shiner & stuck in the corner of her mouth. She was approx. 25" & I would say about 7or8 # later I caught one of the males that was with her the same way,he was about 16-18" didn't get a pic. cause we left the camera back at the car & I didn't want to take a chance on her dying. caught perch, small northerns, gills & trout, bass. released all in good shape .All in all a great day.  sam

Fairly certain it is not in fact illegal.  Some would consider it unethical, but that's about it.  Don't see the commission specifying it either...

hey the pros do it. Half the stupid fishing shows i watch is targeting spawing bass.

but its a majority of us who should be considered unethical.... especially the ones who fish for steelhead during their spawning time.

Taken from this page on the PFBC website: http://www.fish.state.pa.us/fishpub/summary/inland.html
NOTE: It is not a violation of the bass regulations if a bass is immediately returned unharmed to the waters from which it was taken. It is unlawful for an angler to cast repeatedly into a clearly visible bass spawning nest or redd in an effort to catch or take bass.

Doesn't make specific that this is only illegal during the closed season, but seems to encompass the open season as well. But it is tagged on to a sentence that seems to specifically talk about the closed season.  The way it's written, I'd take it to mean at any time though.

Would be nice to hear directly from a WCO on this one.

its unethical either way and its not much of an accomplishment if you are putting the bait right infront of it

About 90% of fishing is ALL about putting the bait in front of the fish.  The other 10% is you bringing it in.

It's in season, end of story.  Junior game wardens abound as usual.  It was released to boot.  Nice catch by the way.

exactly as stated above. IT WAS RELEASED. where it can go swim back to the nest all teed off. If someone kept it or killed it I would be more apt to complain but I can't say that I wouldn't do the same.

The trout bite was still good this weekend. Kooser received extra trout because of the cool water. Lake is loaded with algae blooms, but easy to fish around. Still many bass on the beds--please practice catch and release!
