i wonder if people could survive these days without phone, cable and the internet?

Still without power here in southern Butler Co, as are a couple thousand around here.  Allegheny Power hotline says we'll have power Friday by 6 PM.  I'll believe it when I see it, as every day they keep pushing the projection back.

Borrowed a generator from a buddy to keep our freezer full of meat and our fridge cold.

So, yes, I'm logged in at work

No too bad here.  A neighbor had a tree hit his house and break his natural gas meter.  That got everyone's attention real quick.  Nothing like a natural gas leak to motive people to do something...  The gas line was fixed the next day, but the house will need quite a bit of work.

As for power, ours only flickered off and on a bit.  I guess we were lucky.

speaking of generators. any of you get that generatior out after 3 years or so and finally get it started but find out there's no voltage output don't think there's a major problem with it. it most likely lost it's residual magnetism. in this case "flashing the field" should restore the magnetism. it's not a hard thing to do. there is a difference between "flashing the field" on brushless generator and a generator with brushes. if anyone has this problem i will be glad to explain the procedure or answer questions if i can. ~dt

The news said there were gusts to 81 mph in Beaver and Butler counties.  Ouch.  Power flicked off and on a couple times for us right before the Steelers game but that was it.

Follow the recommendations of the generator manufacturer for field flashing but here is something that I googled up.

Field Flashing of Portable Generators
This tip comes from the Briggs & Stratton Customer Education Department. As an alternative to flashing a rotor winding with a battery applied to the brushes, an electric drill may be used. Follow these steps to flash the generator:
  • Plug the electric drill into the generator receptacle. (Cordless drills do not work)
  • If the drill is reversible, move the direction switch to the forward position.
  • Start the generator
  • While depressing the trigger on the drill, spin the drill chuck in reverse direction. This will excite the field and the generator will now produce electricity. If spinning the chuck one direction does not work, try spinning the chuck in the other direction as you may have the reverse switch positioned backwards.

Use caution not to get your hand or other materials caught in the chuck. As soon as the field is excited, the generator will produce power and the drill will turn on.
The reason this works is because the electric motor in the drill will act as a small generator when spun backwards. The magnets in the drill's motor induce a voltage into the motor windings, which is fed back through the trigger, cord and into the generators receptacle. From there it goes into the power winding of the stator. The voltage going through the power winding creates a magnetic field, which is intensified due to the iron core of the stator laminations. The rotor intersects this magnetic field as it is spun past the power winding, thus inducing a voltage in the rotor winding. Once current flow is present in the rotor winding the rotor has been flashed.
If flashing the field does not make the generator work, you may have additional problems, besides a lack of magnetism in the rotor. Further testing will be needed. Hopefully, this will give a simple way to field flash your generator if needed - Bruce Perrault

Is this a common problem with generators?  Will running them more frequently prevent it?  I was thinking about buying one and I'd never heard of this before reading this thread.

Same here. Thanks for the tip. I bought a generator for the Ivan storm a few years ago. As soon as I walked out of the store power came on.

kept it anyway, and I run it spring/late fall to keep the gas fresh with stabilizer. Never had a power outage long enough to need one since (knock wood-I know...I just cursed myself!).

We had virtually nothing from Ike here in the far northeast. Breezey, that's about it.  We had some real good soaking rain from the remnants of Hanna though...
