Almost every trip when I have used a strike indicator.  I generally use twist on's that are half orange and half yellow.  It never fails that one or two will hit it...  One of these days, I will hide a hook in that thing...

Oh yeah, almost every trip.  There have been a few days when they're not really hitting anything, but they'll surface on the float every now and then, talk about frustrating.

Not on Erie with steelhead, but I've had largemouth take my float and run with it to the point that I had a fight on my hands for a few moments.  Never came close to landing any of those handful of bass, but they definitely hung onto that float like maniacs...completely ignorant of the nightcrawler just a few feet below it.  I've also had trout hit and take it under, though they usually realize that it tastes a little stale, and spit it out within a second or two.

i dont use an indicator too often, i use more of a bottom bounce high stick method with red amnesia, but i have seen it happen a few times to my father. He was half tempted to start using a stinger on it

yeah, I've had that happen alot of times also. If you change you're fly to the same color as the indicator, and make the same presentation, sometimes they will eat it. I caught a 22" brownie that way at yellow creek in Bedford.

I remember the very first trip I ever took steelheading it happened to me... After reading a few books, and talking to some of my buddies that have steelhead fished for a while, I decided against using a large dry as my indicator "fly"...

that changed on my second trip...  only caught 3 steelies the first trip, and had at least 3 more hit the indicator...  On the second trip, I had tied up a chartreuse and orange stimulator in about a 6 2xl shank and used it as an indicator...  the guys were laughing at me, but in the first 20 minutes of fishing, I had land 2 steelies... one on the telico nymph underneath, and one on the big stimi...

I have yet to catch another fish on the stimi, but do not take chances!!!

hehehe...

Frequently i will have trout grab the indy early in the am. I now throw a big, bright attractor first and get a few on top even in cold water.
