I live along a trout stream that runs into a lake.  In the spring when they stock a fair amount of fish make their way into the lake.  I was wondering if those fish would go thru the motions and move back up stream in the fall

I dont believe they would, i could be wrong but i think they would remain in the lake. Although if the water was up they could come up into the creek but i dont think you would get a run of trout

Yes, they will definately try and enter the stream to spawn. This is especially true for browns, although I am sure the brookies would do the same. If there are bows, they will likely follow to feast on the eggs.

I have found several smaller lakes that get runs of browns in the fall. These runs are certainly not large but, it is a really cool site to see and you typically won't find another fisherman anywhere close. If you are lucky enough to have a "run" in your stream I would be sure to keept it quiet.

Well since im wrong i have a question. Is it like genetic that trout, steelhead and salmon do this or what, i was never sure why they did it in the first place

I am no biologist, but I would venture a guess to say that it is partly genetic. It seems to be instilled in a trouts mind to enter any stream to look for a suitable spawning area.

If you find a lake that has some trout, find any tributary to it and look around. It can be pretty hit or miss and you can't have high expections, although I have found some large browns in streams entering a trout lake that are barely wider than a car. I have never witnessed brook trout doing this, but I would expect them to do the same. All of the lakes I tried it at contained browns and rainbows only.

Its genetics, hormones, all that good stuff. Basically instincts tell them to spawn, and that the stream is the place to go to spawn. Its also why they get color.

Kinda like teenage boys suddenly develop a desire to "spawn", learn to dance, dress to impress, and find a hangout that is in close proximity to good populations of hens...

Trout need certain elements to spawn successfully:* Moving, highly aireated water that is as unpolluted as possible, small stone or gravel bottoms, and cool to cold water. Trout will (usually) not spawn on a mud bottom or without the presence of moving water. Fall is a GREAT time to see moving trout and an excellent time to catch HUGE browns which run upatream to spawn.
* No Tim, not a bottle of wine, soft lighting, and a good "movie".
