i live in greensburg and out here every stream i have ever dropped my trap in i have caught chubs. Just sometimes have to find a hole deep enough to submerge the trap. I am willing to bet that its like that anywhere

Have some fun and get some size 12 hooks and some maggots.  You can catch them as fast as you can throw a line out most places.  What are you fishing for that you need them for bait?

Get a two-ended cage and ball up a couple pieces of bread, throw it in a deep hole tied to a rope and cover up the rope with a rock or two.Come back in a couple days,50 or more in a good hole.I used to catch them in almost any medium to small stream as a teenager, they are all over like Trailblazer said.

I heard rock bass work real good too.  Plenty of them all along the shoreline of the Yough any where there are rocks.  Park at the bike trail parking lot in Sutersville and walk upriver from there and hit the rocks with a small jig and worm.  Also, you can walk upriver along the tracks in Coulter and catch a ton in amongst those rocks.  Most of the ones I catch by accident are 4"-6" which would seem to me to be the perfect bait size.

I like to use dog food in my minnow traps. It seems to put off more of a scent and holds up longer than bread.

i always have to put a rock or something to sink my bait, otherwise they eat it from outside the cage. They love dog food. I wrap mine up in a piece of screen, put in a little piece of steel, and roll it up and put zip ties at each end to keep it closed. Last week I caught a couple of crayfish and used them also. They didnt last long, the bass gobbled them up quick.

Ive caught two water snakes in one trap before. Talk about suprised. I heard live trout work the best. We always use a minow sane to catch the big suckers. They work well to. the bigger the better.

I never had much luck with suckers, My self I like live gills 4-7" for flats, I've used both chubs and suckers with no sucuss, switched to gills and had more hits this year than I've had in 2 years using the others, just my thoughts Try em all and use what works.

What kinds of hooks are you using to hook the blue gill and where do you hook them?

I tossed my trap in and ended up with four baby brook trout. Is that legal for bait?

I don't know, but you may want to keep your "trap location" a secret!

Hammer, I am not really looking for the name of the stream. But did you really get brook trout? If so is this a stream known to support brook trout or is this an indication of improving conditions?

PMs are welcome if you feel like it.

I hook any live bait that is big enough, in one nostril and out the other.  This seems to keep them alive for a long time & nice hard bone doesn't send them sailing on the cast.

Hammerdown, unfortunately it isn't. In most parts of Pennsylvania keeping a trout is around 9 inches? Trapping and netting for Trout has been illegal for some time.. some time meaning probably around 50 years. I just wouldn't do it.. Although you probably could get away with it it's definately unlawful and carma.. is well.. a beach.
