Saturday morning started off great.  Walked in early dragging a scent trail and got to my stand nice and early.  At 7:10 had a mature 6pt walk in.  It was no moster but with 2 jobs and 3 kids, he was going to get shot if he presented a good opportunity....he did.  12 yards broadside-slightly quartered away.  Drew back and let it fly.  Shooting from a sitting position..which I practice all the time.  In the heat of the moment didn't realize how much I had turned.  On release by bottem cam clipped my knee and kicked by bow right.  Hit the buck in the hind quarter.  Was absolutely sick.  Gave him two hours and got some help to start tracking.  Was on suprisingly good blood for the first two hours...then the rain came and the trail vanished.  Searched until 3 yesterday with no luck.  Returned this morning with more help and searched another 5 hours.  No deer....don't think there is a worse feeling in hunting.  Don't like the cyotes eating on my dime or leaving a wounded animal in the woods.

It's a bad thing, but unfortunatly if you hunt long enough it is something that will happen to all of us. There are just so many variables to consider. you did the right thing in your time you searched the rain was not good.

It has happened to us all at one point or another. Just try and forget it.

Hitting the cam off my knee is something I've done alot.  Not on any deer, but in practice.  I find that shooting to my right (I'm left handed) is a non-issue but shooting straight ahead you gotta watch the cam.  I try not to shoot sitting down if the cam is between my legs.  Luckily, the past few deer I've shot sitting down came to the right.  I actually try to position my stands like that cause it can be tuff shooting to my left with a harness on.  Cost me a dandy a few years ago.

It sounds like a flesh wound...albeit, a bad one but nontheless, you didn't hit anything vital or the deer would have died. He will survive.

For a little while anyways....Until he dies of gang green or someone shoots him and finds out the meat is no good...

I know it doesn't make you feel any better, but: the buck my buddy shot last year in rifle season had a year old wound through the back strap (where the hair was encapsulated in the meat and then healed over. It also had a broadhead in the shoulder (a year old) and a hole in the back ham near the rectum from a wound that year. If you don't put it in the cavity they are tougher than you think.

I once shot a nice 8 just under the backbone but over the lungs and looked for him for four days. I killed him four weeks later in rifle season while he was trailing a doe.I was worried but the meat was fine on that one.

Man, I hear ya, a buddy shot a huge 11 last year and we never found him.

Worst feeling in the world. You did all you could. Hopefully he'll survive.

No doubt...got these in an email a long time ago, a true testament to toughness...

and a couple 'healed' up legs with normal ones for comparison...

So, to the original poster, I'd say shake it off & get back in the game. Sucks it happened, but it does happen. And deer are tough.
