i was up camp 2 weeks ago,in tidioute, fished the brokenstraw, and was doing great on bright egg patterns,my son was amazed that i had such success with them this time of yr,of course he was holding his own on scuds, olive green,, then went to a small stream with natural brookies, below hearts content, and we got 5 on small bead heads

Yeah I've actually caughten real big trout on small griffith's gnats in the Spring. size 22ish.

I've not really tried Wolly Buggers... though catching a nice 15 inch brookie really restored my faith.

Rockhard, I've had limited success on egg patterns. Up at this river acouple weeks ago and happen to snatch me a few out of a tree. The only thing I didn't like about them was because they were foam after a while of getting smacked around they started to come apart. But with stocked fish I definately could see it working.

ROCKHARD, what color chenille & yarn? I tied up this (what I'm calling..) "Peacock Style Egg" Pattern. What i did was take some lead wire put 3-4 waps on the hook. Then take 5-6 strands of peacock hurl and wrapping what looks like an egg... Haven't tried it yet.

In the fall I generally use streamers but also mix in the egg patterns and do pretty good.  There's always room for griffith's gnats in my box if I see anything top water.  San Juan worms after a soaking rain especially but they're also pretty productive generally speaking.  Hare's ear and scuds and caddis pupa also are a must.  Lil bit of everything, always good to mix it up.

Good idea Jaybo. Griffiths Gnats are always great flies, even in winter! I've been tying alot so I've really updated my box with San Juans and egg patterns, not much of an egg tier though.

Phesant Tail is hands down (for me) the top producer in any season.  Drop it underneath a pink san juan or egg pattern in the fall.

Good idea. I've been tieing Prince Nymphs (size 14,16) and a lot of Pheasent Tails, as well as san juan worms. Not sure about using two flies. In reading some John Barr fly books I guess it's illegal in some places? Probably not in Pennsylvania but I like to stay old school. We'll see, I mainly only tie red San Juans but I'll give that a try.

Not sure about using two fries.

Witty jab at the Japanese or the next big thing in bait drifting?  You be the judge!

My advice: stick with a single fry for now, you can always get another if they're hitting on them.  Try the salt-impregnated, I've heard they keep the fish holding on longer.

Sorry......couldn't resist!
