Anyone finding a lot of acorns this year?  I've only been to a couple places that had any acorns at all.  This doesn't seem like a banner year for apples either, but some trees are loaded.  What are you guys seeing out there?

Here in Crawford county it seems like every apple tree is loaded. The mast crop is heavy in some places and nonexistent in others....

Apples are heavy here in Western Westmoreland Co., from what I can see.  My parent's peach and pear trees were loaded as well this year.  I had a banner year for acorns last year on the pin oak in my yard and it usually only produces every other year for me.  There is a light crop this year but that is way better than usual for the off years.

I'm in Westmoreland too, and this is similar to what I've seen.  BTW, do the deer eat those pin oak acorns?

Pin oaks are in the red oak family and typically more bitter than white oak varieties, I have seen them eat them, but not if there are options.  Ducks however are not nearly as particular.

I ask because my wife planted two pin oaks in my front yard last year.  I was wondering if they were ever going to become practical.

Found a white oak yesterday that the deer have everything cleared in a 20yrd circle, unbelievable how they will focus on one tree.

Deer enjoy the pin oak acorns.  Not quite as much as white oaks but better than reds.  And what is weird, all the neighborhood dogs, including mine, eat them up as well.  The rabbits and squirrels go "nuts" for them too.  I don't get deer in my front yard (housing plan) but I took garbage bags full of leaves/acorns after driveway/yard clean-up to my parents front yard hill that abuts woods and the deer were there every night last fall until the acorns were cleaned up.  I think you'll get some visits from the deer when those pin oaks start producing.  Last year I had a very heavy crop, so heavy in fact that my driveway was a hazard and I had to sweep it every three or four days to prevent people from falling or turning ankles.  It was like a driveway full of marbles.  I have been picking oak seedlings out of my flower beds since spring!  Squirrels love mulch as a hiding place for their tasty treasures.

White Oaks are doing well all things considered. IE: Gypsie Moths. Below avg. though. There's gonna be quite a few dead Oaks around here again next year. Third year in a row hit hard. They didn't "green up" much like the "experts" said. A few reds have dropped and squirrels are working them over around the house. We're due for a good crop. Shagbark Hickorys are low this year. Mockernuts are high, butternuts are real good. Beech seem to be good. lots of hulls on the ground already opened up from the critters.

My apples have for the most part have gone to the d*** deer and squirrels. Not that there's anything wrong with that... apple fed deer and squirrel are tasty. I'll just have more meat this year than apple pies. Fall rasberries are overwhelming.

Apple trees in the woods around me that I've seen are above avg. but not banner. Squirrels maybe there too? The rats are everywhere!

EDITED: Forgot to mention the big fat Raccoon too.........Anyone hear what the speculation of fur prices are for this year?

I really hope you do, that is going to be a hot evening stand for the earlier part of the season.  It really was crazy how many deer singled out those few oaks and have been terrorizing them.  T-minus 10 days!!!!!

acorns spotty in greeneco, same in marion co wv, apples everywhere, hunting persimmons is a great idea, but it seems like they drop later and later every year.  I know of a couple persimmon trees in a thicket, impossible to get to quitely, they are loaded again this yr, always deer around it when they start dropping

White oaks dropping are non-existent where I'm at.  Mostly because of the moths.  I have about 14 white oaks in my backyard, not a one dropping.  The moths did not hit these however.  Must have had a late frost in the spring.  I've found a few dropping rock oaks but it's spotty, deer will eat them up.  I've found a good number of reds dropping but deer seem to find them less than desirable.   Going to be an interesting year.  On the bright side,  the deer will have to travel farther than their own bed to find food.   That's one plus.  I find the most difficult hunting when they can reach out while bedded and eat acorns.

I've been trying to find a stand of white oak worth hunting for two months without success in Warren county. A few reds and others but no white. Lots of soft mast and as soon as the deer finish up what oak there is they will be back to the soft stuff.

Yeah, I located one white oak in an area I hunt, with a grand total of maybe 12 nuts under it.  Couple red oaks up North look productive, but my white oak at camp (a huge tree) is barren.

Apples loaded here in Venango, acorns are plentiful but you kinda have to hunt to find the areas where they are.

Between my neighbors and I we have 5 or so apple trees. We actually are now having to rake the apples and the trees are still loaded. Deer, bears, and my lab are loving it though

Even the scrubby-ass apple trees growing near my stand had a couple of sad, saggy apples on them.  And these trees are on the verge of death.
