Status: offline 		I have been talking about trying pinning for a while now and was thinking about getting either a Greys Berwick or Okuma Aventa. The Berwick looks like a higher quality but the reviews I have read seem to point to the Aventa. I have read the Berwick has a slower start up and a lenghty break in period. Any thoughts?

Status: offline 		scrap the aventa and get the sheffield... you won't be sorry.  Regardless of what you do, don't buy it from an outfitter like gander mountain... fishusa it baby.  The aventa is poorly machined.

Status: offline 		Brew I just started pinning and i have looked at the aventa and the sheffields. Go with the sheffeilds all together thats wat everyone i have asked told me and i am very happy with it.

Status: offline 		I would go to fishusa and hold the reels in your hand spin them side by side and see what one you think is the better buy if you get the sheffield you can get the combo for 360 you'll spend more the bewick with the same rod. Its always better to hold the reel before you buy it to see if its all what you thought it would be.

Status: offline 		I have a Bewick, and one thing to remember is that it runs on a bushing not bearings. Bushing reels take a fair amount of time to break in, but once they are they are as nice if not sometimes better as pins with bearings. One plus side of a bushing model is there are no bearings to ever replace (obviously) or get sand/grit in. On a far less important note, bushing models are more traditional. The Bewick though, is not a traditional design. I have a lot reels that run on bushings and some that run on bearings and actually lean towards the bushing models as my perfered design. But it seems(in the states anyway) a lot of models have bearings.

If you do consider getting the Bewick remember that it is incredibly light weight. This is not always a good thing depending on rod selection. It is also a good bit smaller than a lot of pins out there. Smaller reel diameter means you gotta try to reel that much faster when a fish makes a quick run back at you. Mine only see's action for stockies and small carp.

Although I enjoy using my Bewick, one last thing to consider are the handles. This might seem trivial but IMO they are too small, uncomfortable, and cheaply made. Before I even fished mine I had longer ones machined from brass and with the little bit of extra weight actually made the reel start up much better, and I think the cut back the amount of break-in time.

Status: offline 		Stay away from the Aventa,on the lower end of price for a pin reel,the Sheffield is bullet proof.Mine has a few years on it and is as good as the day it was purchased.Keep in mind these reels will last a life time,if taken care of,save the cash and get one that you will be happy with.

Status: offline 		If you really want a higher end reel and don't want to spend the new price, go to some forums that are based more towards float fishing such as Salmon Crazy, Float Fishing.net, or The Steelhead Site.  There are used reels that pop up for sale in those sites all the time.  You might find yourself a pretty good deal.  Good Luck!

Status: offline 		There are some decent deals out there if your lucky enough to find them. I got a okuma sheffield reel with a cortland endurance rod for $125 and both were in like new condition. Reel was filled with backing and siglon f and i even got the rest of the spool of line.

I also saw a nice sheffield go for $108 on ebay about a month ago.

Status: offline 		eghhh suckk.. tough to let go.. I always wanted to meet KingoftheboardJH and let an 80 foot drift effortlessly reach his 1 o'clock swing position and the float go DUNK!...

all aside... I have a never used black sheffield that I will let go for 180 shipped.  Any less on an unused killing machine doesn't seem worth it to me.

Status: offline 		It's up to the judges discression, from what i can gather by reading the rules,Pinner took a beating when he asked about using the pin earlier.If you can use a spinning rod the pin should be fair game.Most of the fly guys use floats,sorry"strike indicators".Just go and fish and irritate them.There is going to be a CP  get togethor Nov. 14 th, on the salmon river,will be a good time.Sign up on Salmon Crazy.

Status: offline 		I really don't have anything against Pinners, I just wondered if they considered that setup legal at the one fly.  Since there are some people I know who pin who are going to be at the one fly, that's what I asked it here.....so I take your thanks for me stating the obvious Carphead, you are a bright individual yourself.

If you need to drift your pin in front of me, ill just move down or watch you fight your fish you catch while irritating me and continue casting..

Any self respecting "pinner", or flyfisherman for that matter, would never drift in front of another angler. The funny thing is I've seen more di(khead flyfisherman drifting in front of other people and in general making a complete ass out of themselves than I have seen centerpinners. In fact I've yet to see somebody with a pin do anything like that.

I'd go as far to say most of the guys on here have only been exposed to people using a pin on the tribs. You would be hard pressed to find more fools packed in one area than you would up there. All fishing methods included.  

You'd never have the problem of having me drift past you anyhow. I avoid crowds as much as I can for the most part and rarely fish with my pins for steelhead. The majority of waters I pin fish would leave the guys who only know how to fish for trout on the fly scatching their heads.

My friends pin wherever, and saw it the first time in BC years ago before it ever got remotely popular here.  It works....But I'd take one fish with an aggressive swing over 30 float dunkers any day, but hey that's just me.  I'm not an elitist and will fish with anyone if they have a wal-mart setup or are getting pimped by Whorvis, a 14 foot pin on a 15 foot creek or Ugly Stick Ultra lite....Richard Craniums come in all shapes and sizes.

As far as a head scratching, The only time I scratch my head is when I see someone pinning in Erie, but hey, you gotta do what u gotta do to catch fish right?

Status: offline 		I don't understand why it is such an unbelievable thing that some choose to pin in Erie?  I'm not being an idiot about this either, I'm just seriously curious to why you would think this?  Who cares about how anyone chooses to catch fish, as long as they are not ignorant with their procedure....right?  IMHO, of all the methods of catching the Erie steelhead, I think it would be pretty darn hard to argue the fact that pinning would be the MOST effective method of catching them.  Effective meaning numbers of fish which is exactly why I spend time there.

maybe.  i can think of a lot of conditions where a fly rod is better than a pin.
