Does anyone know if the smallmouth are in this area yet? Fish this section of water quite often but later in the season. Any help would greatly be appreciated! Thanks guys!

Yeah, their there but they still have lockjaw.  It seems like the trout are beatin the bass to the bait most of the time.

GadaboutGaddus,

The bass are active in the Whitsett to West Newton stretch of the river! Alot of big ones are being caught, I am talking 18" to 22" range. They are hitting everything, minnies, meal worms, super worms, and flies, if you fly fish. At Eureka one day last week, pulled out 3 nice ones on flies. Hope this helps.

They are there and all down the river in good numbers. Like my buddy 71gto said there are some real beauties.
I C&R a 20" last week when the water warmed up a little. They are bulls when hooked in fast water. Hold on tight and enjoy. Years ago the state record smallie was caught in Smithton 7+lbs. only to be beaten out a few years later by a Lake Erie fish. Put 'em back and let 'em grow.

I was at Eureka a few Friday's ago.  Caught some Trout, 2 Sheephead, and Surprisingly 2 Walleye.  One was legal.  No bass.

Depending on the river's depth, you may have to know where the channels are.

Thanks Puffy.....

I take it then that the majority of the fishing in this section of the yough by most of the guys on this board is done from shore?

I always wear either my waders or old shorts (weather depending) when I fish around Smithton. While it would be nice to have a canoe or something, I've never really had any issues of not being able to fish without a boat.

Sutersville Gauge says 6' and falling , 4.5 is perfect for my boat.
But watch out for the goonies and some are sharp, they"ll shred a boat in a heartbeat.

Yes,  Needs to get below 5 atleast.  This is at Suttersville.  4.5 to 4 is the best IMO.

I just hate having days off and not being able to fish my favorite river.  Might have to opt for Meadow.

Fished the yough today and it's definately high and stained.  The water temp dropped a good bit too.  It may look ok in a few days depending on thunderstorms and water release from the dam.

I would suggest finding somwhere else to wade...boating there would not be so bad.

Just got back from the Yough and it is a little too high for safe wading.  You can always check the level at:

http://newweb.erh.noaa.gov/ahps2/hydrograph.php?wfo=pbz&gage=stsp1&view=1,1,1,1,1,1

Like aranbp said, 4 to 4.5 is optimal.

i live a quarter mile from the river just about a mile downstream from connellsville, and have been fishing this river over 40 years from connellsville to sutersville and only know of one unnavigable strech between adelaide and connellsville and that's about 100 hundred yards long otherwise you can boat it, just be careful of the big rocks

Youghman brings up a good point about C&R. How many of you would like to see the Yough river C&R ?

Master angler....I assume you are mainly referring to bass. I disagree....there are so many SMs healthily growing in that river that I find it hard to get a bait past them in summer when looking for other species as well. I do think the size limit should be at 15" all year instead of the current summer limit of 12".
I think that current bag limits (if so desired) are working fine, certainly in the area of the Yough that I fish.

Current limits are fine. The problem is people taking illegal fish, too small or too many!

Take a picture-Leave the fish.
I'm not advocating the Yough go C&R, that's just what I do.
The sad part is the way our economy is going-gas,food, etc.-people will be keeping everything they catch.
Hard times are hard times and I'm not judging anyone.
I agree w/ 71gto(how ya' doin' Doug?) about illegal catches. It's our duty as sportsmen to report violations, whenever we see them occur.

I of course war referring to bass. what do u all think of a slot limit?  given adherence to a slot, do u feel it would increase the quality of the smallmouth fishery?
