Hi all, first time poster and brand new fly fisherman here.

I got invited to Yellow Creek Trout Club, near Indiania, for this coming weekend. I'm looking for advice on what flys to use. Do they prefer dry, or wet this time of year? (I'm having trouble finding hatch chart info for this area.)

I know alot of you guys probably stay away from paid spots, as it's a way different 'experience'. I'm ok with it since I'm just starting out, and have a severe case of cabin fever.

Also, my buddy going up with me will have a spinning setup. I'm assuming cleos or any standard trout lure will be fine, just curious if anyone has a recommended color?

Welcome dc,

I have fished YC a handful of times. We fish in one of their annual tournaments they hold in early May. But, I also have fished there a few times earlier in the season.

Most of your action will be subsurface, but you may encounter a few fish rising. If there will be a hatch, it will more than likely be caddis or little black stoneflies, and probably will be sporadic. Elk hair Caddis in tan and black in sizes 14-18 will take care of them should you see some risers.

Most of your fishing will be done nymphing or tossing streamers. For nymphing egg patterns, generic mayfly nymphs, generic caddis pupae, and smaller stonefly nymphs will get it done. Streamers work well there also, don't be afraid to fish a big one(4-5"). They stock some giant fish in there, but they are still stocked so don't give the fish too much credit, they are still easily caught.

They stocked about three weeks ago. By now the fish have acclimated to the stream. A large portion of the feeding (aside from pellets) will be done on alewives that are rolling along the bottom of the creek. they get torn up as they come out of the lake this time of year and the fish in the creek gourge themselves on them. A Silver/White Matuka about 3" long fished deep and dead sticked will keep you on fish all day. You can always pick them up on other standby patterns as mentioned.

Thanks guys! I really appreciate the advice. I'll post pics when I get back.

I know this is a fly fishing board, but any advice for my 'spinning buddy'? Just looking for a few preferred lures or colors that work.

dc, I was just there yesterday and wooly buggers, particularly brown/black, all black, and olive were productive. Also a few caught on San Jaun worms. Only saw an occasional rise. The water is still pretty cold. lou

Wasn't able to go 2 weeks ago, but three of us made it up there on Saturday, and my one friend and I finally popped our cherry's... first trout on our fly rods! Our other experienced buddy caught 4. They were hitting olive wolly buggers and prince nymphs.

Lou, you were right, I should have had something something silver/white, as you could see the trout chasing those minnows all over. Some other guy was prepared, and did very well with a zonker.

Thanks again for the advice, I only hooked two and landed one in 9 hours, but I was very happy with that. (It's really amazing how fast the day goes when you're on the water!)

Congats man, it seems like you had a good time.

What was the condition of the stream? Just curious because I will be there next Friday for a tourney.

Stream was good, not crystal clear and not real muddy. Probably 2-3 ft visibility.

Loomis--I think a one day pass is around $50 a person, I am not sure of all the specifics. I will be there next friday, if I remember I will find out some info for you.
