I'm planning to make a trip to Woodcock Creek Lake this weekend, and I was wondering what sort of lures and techniques work well for muskies there.  I will be fishing from a boat.

Haven't fished the lake in long time.  There used to be a ton of perch in there, which the muskies probably feast on. I have caught muskies in the small creek below the dam on live bluegill.  Hope that helps.

The last 2 I caught there I was trolling crawler harnesses for walleyes. They were out deep in the creek channel.

If you don't mind my asking, about how deep were you running them?

I would troll large perch & crappie colored baits (FAST, 4 TO 6 MPH), one riding up between 4&8' deep and one between 8 & 12' deep. i'd use this tactic between the dam and boat launch.  if this didn't produce in a couple hours i would slow down and run smaller lures.  I would always be running a perch colored lure of some type.  If your into some casting, go into the creek at the upper end and throw spinnerbaits into the fallen trees.  Also up the upper end between the causeway and beach are some grass beds.  try short line trolling (5 to 10' of line) right over the top of the grass.  I hope this helps and let me know if you catch anything.  I haven't fished woodcock too much the last couple years but these tips usually produce.

I was running them on bottom bouncers. The depth was 22' but the old creek channel will drop down to 26'-27'.

I have had three on this year landed one by throwing a spinner bait you would use for bass, when i grab my muskie gear cant even raise one, my partner has had 10+ using spinner baits this year he fishs there more than me. We would work the shore going for bass, and they crash the party so to speak. there is lots in there go get them.

I would forget about trolling this time of year, the highest concentrations of fish will be still holding in or close to the weeds.  Focus on the weedlines and pockets up toward the bridge and even in the bay above the bridge casting any lure you have confidence in.  Bucktails are my favorite in that lake this time of year but, any minnow immitation plug should get some fish going.  There aren't a ton of huge fish in that lake but, it is still alot of fun catching any musky of any size.

I was lookng more for numbers than size.  I'm pretty new to musky fishing and I just want to put a few in the boat.  Thanks for the information everybody.

How is the fishing from shore? The g/f and I are thinking about going up to that neck of the woods to fish this weekend. I always wanted to fish French Creek too so maybe we'll hit that as well

Penn,
Your best bet would be to go to the outflow with some 5-6" suckers.
French creek is low at the moment.

Thanks 'yote. The G/F has her mind on toothy fish. I told her about catching Musky and Pike then we stopped and talked to a guy in Fombell and he had some mounted in there. Now thats all is wants to catch. Hell of a jump from Sheephead and Bluegills lol.

How's the Pike and Bass fishing in there?

If you have a gps on your boat I'd spend some time marking the weed edges.  Then troll 5mph with baits short lined like mentioned earlier.  Smaller Wiley's would my first choice but any 5-6" bait that you can troll fast may work.

I caught a 34" musky trolling a minnow rap.  I didn't have any luck casting or trolling larger lures.  My dad hooked up with another musky casting an F13 Rapala, but it broke off.  We also caught 3 walleyes and a nice smallmouth.  All in all it was a good trip.

I have alway had luck at the outflow with a Joe's Fly spinner bait.  About 3 weeks ago, the woman was out of town and my fishing buddy (BassAckwards) was at work and I went up there to try and catch a few smallies or rock bass.  I ended up catching a 43" muskie just off the Southern edge of the outflow.  I had no net or plyers...so make sure you have adequate supplies.  I would post a pic but not too good with computers and the file's too large.  Had the time of my life with that hog.

Would like to see that musky if you could shrink that down.  Did you catch that musky on Joe's Fly? Seems that might be a lot of fish for that little lure.

Serves him right for fishing while I was at work ! I've found out that the old saying "Big lure, big fish" is not always true. Especially in woodcock. Ol' Carcus caught a very nice 6 # largemouth in Wilhelm with a tiny spinner. I agree with you Penn, it was a lot of fish for that little spinner. I can't believe the stinger hook didn't break - I've has smallmouth that broke them off before. It's must have been his day ! Where you out of Penn ?? I know some pretty good spots around for toothy critters. Carcus - you up for doing a little (or a lot) of fishing this weekend. I got a full tank of gas and batteries are charged. Pulled some nice hammerhandles out of one of our favorite spots last Sunday. E-mail me and let me know if your coming down this weekend -

I was able to find the picture of Carcus's LM caught on a itty bitty little spinner. We were hunting toothy critters thus the glove on his hand. Caught this one by suprise.  Carcus - I can put a pic of your musky on here if you send me the pic's. Also, caught a really mean turtle with a joes fly spinner at woodcock -

As for soup......I think I was more afraid of him than he was of me ! He was hissing and bitting at me. Hope he got the lure out of his mouth - what a way to loose a lure. For some reason I felt sorry for him - so I let him go.

Bass, in the one picture you posted, from what i can tell that looks like a northern pike. Did you or your buddy catch that from Woodcock? If so i was always lead to believe there were no northerns in Woodcock.
