Any of you carp guys fish Wilhelm much? I've never really targeted carp but I'm going to start. There's HOGS in there! I've been seeing them all week while I'm bass fishing. The downer is, if I'm seeong carp, I'm not catching bass. Wonder if there's anything to that?

Anyway, not really a point to the thread other than to see if anyone has any luck there. I figure they'd put up a fun fight for my lunchtime fishin. Doughballs? Should I koolaide flavor them or anything? Like I said, rookie. Plan on trying it out next week when I get back from vacation.

Wilhelm used to be my main carp lake-------used to rip 'em there.  I've caught them to 27 lbs.  I've done plenty of carpin' there in the past and feed dem carp thousands of lbs. of bait.  That's why they're hogs.
Ain't been there yet this year.  I know of another carper fishing it this this spring and was rippin' 'em around the time they were spawning.  I rate it the best carp lake in NW PA.
I've caught them there on any carp bait ya can think of, and some ya wouldn't.  It usually helps to pre-bait an area and then fish it.  Ya can use corn, bread, animal feed or whatever.  I ain't feed them lately so dey probably hungry.

Do ya fish from shore or boat?  If ya go, let me know, I may be able to join ya (if the lake ain't closed).  Give me a good reason to head up there to Sandy Lake Feed and stock up on some carp bait as well.

I fish wilhem every weekend bass and or walleyes in the morning but I take with me a 5 gallon bucket of boiled field corn I do this from my fishing boat after bass fishing I will pre bait usally two spots with the corn always a hard clean botton in 5 to 7 ft of water. Then later that evening take my kids and wife carp fishing on our or should I say her pontoon which is kept at the marina and makes it very easy and convienent for this method we just anchor in the pre baited area and fish with the cooked field corn usally this method will result in a couple of fish of approx 15 to 20 lbs plus some smaller ones Would like to get a 30 this year I think wilhelm has em but we'll see

Good to see I wasn't the only one feeding the carp.  I've fed them many 5 gal. buckets of boiled Sandy Lake Feed field corn over the years, amongst other things.  I've done all my fishing from shore tho.  Good to hear they're still rippin' there.  A group of us carpers have gotten together for a weekend outing every fall for the past seven years and caught tons of carp.  15-20 lbs. sounds about right sizewise from my experience there, but I'd say the average size is in the low to mid doubles.  I've been saying for years there are 30+ lb. carp in there tho, but so far us carpers ain't been able to break 30..........................yet.  I've read a report in a newspaper of a 45lber being caught outa there, 10 years ago-------------------that's why I started carpin' there in the first place.

There is absolutely no truth to that.  Anyone that tells ya otherwise is clueless.  Corn for bait or chumming is fine. Trust me.  Ive had the WCOs at Wilhelm stand there and talk to me while I was throwing (actually spodding) the corn in years back.

Yep, that's right.  Every once in awhile, some know-it-all (usually from the city, thank God I don't fish around the city often) will try to tell ya corn or chumming is illegal.  It's always fun to hand them the summary book and ask them to prove their claim or ask them what page number that states it's illegal to use corn------never happened yet.

Chum and they(carp) will come.

pacarper, One time a couple of years ago I went to a carp in at wilhelm I'm thinking this might have been your group The spot was across the lake from Launch 1, by dugans bay but anyway I had one of my kids with me and somebody in your group was kind enough to let him reel in a couple of carp and take pictures and post them on a website.
I was a 2 or 3 times a year carp fisherman but seeing this group catch fish after fish and seeing the methods used peaked my interest to pursue carp more often. We used wheatie balls that day and the corn on a hair out produced the wheaties by i dont know 20 to 1 it seemed like, and since that day it's been nothing but field corn in a pre baited area for me

fry,
Yep, that was our group at the beach.  That's was me that let your son reel the one carp in.  Good to hear yinz stuck with it.  Nice to see a few do pay attention to us goofball carpers.
Keep on feedin' them carp and havin' fun.  Wilhelm is a quality carp lake as you well know.

I had the guy that used to run the marina tell me he saw someone actually shoveling corn out of the back of a pick-up truck into the lake at the beach in the past.   And it wasn't me!  LOL
I'll have to get myself back over to Wilhelm eventually this year.

So I guess the lake isn't closed yet?

Looking at your screen name, do you fry up any of the carp ya catch?

Steve

Pacarper,

Good to see that was you I had met a few years back.  Any carp-ins planned for Wilhelm this year?

No the lake is not closed...The only that was really in question at the lake was state provided services...like the park rangers, the docks, maintence on the grass and the disgusting outhouse bathrooms etc.

No have not kept any carp to eat...but I think I will keep a couple and filet them make a nice beer batter and deep fryem into maybe....
"carp nuggets" and let my camper friends try it...cant see how it can be bad it's deep fried. Heck turds might even be good deep fryed...can't see how the carp nuggets wouldn't be a hit.

No, I wasn't planning on a carp-in at Wilhelm this year.  Last year was the first time a 20 lber. wasn't landed during the event in 7 years (although plenty were still landed, including about three 19lbers.), so I figure it's time to move on and give Wilhelm a break, but we'll see.  Maybe have a carp event up Erie somewhere in the fall when the steelhead start runnin'.  Give people an option of reg. stillhead or Pittsburgh Stillhead.  Don't know if ya saw the pics I've posted here on the forums, but I've caught a couple of pigs from up in Erie the past year.

The turds might taste better than the carp fried.  Hell, fried turds would be a good carp bait.

My uncle caught a 30lber yesterday. Theres lots of carp left in there Steve, yuns dont have to worry about giving ol wilhelm a break. Thats one of the species the lake is still plentiful with. You wouldnt believe the size of some of the ones ive seen in there while bowfishing a couple years back.

A Wilhelm 30?  Whereabouts on the lake?
I know there's tons of carp left, I think it's just time to move onto a different water.

Don't know the size of it for sure, but it was definitely the biggest carp I have ever caught (snagged) 2 years ago while trolling for eyes.  Took me over 20 mins. with 30# fireline chasing it with a boat to land it.  Didn't try to lift it in the boat or anything but, we were just at the spillway at Pymy with the kids this past weekend feeding the carp and the one I snagged was every bit as big as the few bigger ones roaming up there (the ones with the 3/4" thick lips and mouths the size of a small tupper ware container).  Snagged it near the first cove above the dam on the 173 side of the lake.

I was up to wilhelm yesterday, is the water usually that dirty? Its seems like there is very little weeds this year also.

Wilhelm is always murky as far as water color goes this year is normal in my estimation the weed growth is maybe a little slower than normal this year...Hopefully no gas well fracing or brine water has found its way into the lake.

Welp, it works!

Latched onto 2 doozies today at lunch. Only trouble is, I didn't land either one.

First one, I'm convinced would have just stripped all the line off my pole had he not broke me off under a dead-fall. HOG. Second one, I think I would have landed if he hadn't found the same dead fall. Straighted my hook out to look more like a barbed needle.

Exciting lunch none-the-less. They're in there.

Pacarper,

You are correct that is the bait and rig du jour. It seems to take about 24 hrs after pre baiting to have enough fish in the area at wilhelm to have constant action...
