Stopped to pick up some cigars yesterday, and was overwhelmed by the multitude of flavors.

Why do things like cigars, beer, or coffee NEED flavors other than their own? Are we children, or men? If you order a triple, mocha latte, and add cream. Why not just get a choclate bar, and a carton of milk? That's what you really want anyway. Some things should be, what they be.

Sorry, I was due for an out of mid-air rant.

Actually I DO drink alot of cherry flavoured, carbonated water. It's like cherry pop. without the calories, and keep my weight under SOME control.

Spoon,
In answer to your original question:  They are trying to market them to very young people (read that as MINORS) but the law won't allow that.  So they target young women making it chic or fashionable.

Sorry but your rant which included flavored beer is way off. People have been adding all kinds of crazy, wonderful, delightful ingredients to beer for a very long time. It is not a new concept and your really missing out. I suggest u grab some dinner at the north country brewery some evening and sample some of their fine crafted brews.

went into the local barnes and noble book store awhile back to meet a buddy and i asked the server at the coffee counter for a regular coffee.  took a few minutes and help from a co-worker before they understood what i wanted.  didn't want some brown drink from africa or from some island, didn't want whipped cream or a shot of some goo in it.  just wanted a cup of coffee.

Steelys,

I no longer embibe, and trust me, both I AND the surrounding community are better off that way. However, when I did, the taste BEER, be it lager, pilsner, or malt liquor was more than satisfactory. I needed no added flavor, other than the occasional shot of peppermint schapps to sooth a cough. when I drank beer, I wanted to taste beer. The same holds true with coffee. I drink coffe, because I like coffee.

I DID once mix, Genny cream ale, with ginger brandy, trying to get ginger ale. I didn't work out well.

I think it boils down to a generation of folks, who wanted show their "maturity", and "sophisticaion" by indulging in such products, but didn't like the taste. So they needed a way to cover it up.

Here's another example. Try going to the store, and buy a package of Oreo's, or fig Newton's. You have to go through 8-10+ packages of said items, before you can find "just plain old" Oreo's, or fig Newtons. Go to Bruster's, and order a vanilla cone. They look at you, like you're some sort of caveman.

We are becoming a society, overwhelmed by choices. In some, maybe most cases for the better. In many others, I'm not so sure.

Then again, could be that I'm just old DuUd.

I am enjoying a Sam Adams Cherry Wheat beer as I am writing this.  It is pretty good, but not something I would drink a lot of....  I don't drink coffee much, but I do like tea.  At one time when it came to tea your choices were pretty limited, mainly some black tea in little bags.  Now there is a huge variety of black, oolong, green, white, red, and herbal teas...  One of my favorites is a mix of gun powder green tea and peppermint.  It is great in the morning to get me going.

Bug,
Step away from the loading bench early in the morning.   That probably IS gunpowder you're mixing with the peppermint.   Just don't blow your nose or sneeze forcefully after drinking.

spoon,

Since I work for one of the major consumer products companies I think I have some insights to your question.

Partly it is offering choices that appeal to the core consumer that increase your sales.  Partly it is trying to acquire new consumers to your product/product line that wouldn't ordinarily buy it.

The examples you gave (coffee, beer, cigars) are all acquired tastes.  You either like them for their flavor or you don't.  You are a core consumer for coffee.  You probably drink a couple cups a day and really appreciate the taste of coffee.  I'm going to guess you drink it black, maybe with a touch of either milk or sugar, but probably not both.  Some people can't do black, dark, of heavy coffee so they get a lighter coffee and add milk and lots of sugar.  Some people don't even like coffee but will drink a 'fancy' coffee drink.  The more choice that is offered the larger the potential customer base is.

Beer is similar.  I never liked beer, even after my first two years of college.  Sure I drank lots of it, but never really liked it.  Then I learned of different flavors of beers and I started drinking wheat beers (sam adams cherry wheat is still among my favorites).  I slowly progressed from wheat beers to lighter ales to Pale ales and IPAs.  My taste slowly grew darker and darker.  Now there isn't a beer that I won't drink and my preference varies with my mood.  The benefit to the companies is that you can 'hook' someone with your brand with an entry level product (be it beer, cigars, or cleaning products) and build up brand loyalty.  Sam Adams is doing a good job of it because they can bring a non beer drinker into their brand with their lighter beers (either Sam light, sam wheat, or sam summer) and then transition them to their other beers with similar tastes.

It all boils down to the consumer product companies offering a choice that the consumer will purchase.  If there is an opening in the market it will soon be filled.

Thanks,
Rick

haha I was waiting....that is totally true.  I did a report on Philly Blunts my frist year of college and thier sales increase in the first quarter after releasing the different flavors and using Snoop Dogg as an endorsement boosted thier sales by an outrageous rate.  Now I know not many people really buy a philly that are true cigar smokers, causal maybe, but the pot smokers are chomping at the bit for some "Peach flavored weeeed, mannnnn"  They were also wrapped with a seam that makes it easier to split the cigar without a knife. This is what gave rise to the roll up blunt packages..i mean who rolls thier own cigars COME ON! lol...  I think it's funny but it has paid some huge dividends for the Cigar companies now marketing to pot smokers.....

spoon,

Tried and true double-stuffed Oreos are the only way to go and the only way to drink a good cup of jo is purely black. I definitly do not understand the language when looking at a menu of all the so-called fancy flavors.

As for beer Ill sit and pound the yuengling lager without any hesitation but have never been a bud, michelob, iron city type beer drinker. I rather enjoy the I.P.A.s for the super hoppy flavor and aroma, porters at room temp for the smooth characters of the beer, and pale ales during the heat of the day. I have even successfully brewed my own batches of these types and actually were very good. Sorry u can no longer partake but congrats on keeping yourself and the community safe. Some things just arent worth the trouble.

Casts,

I understand what you're saying. I just wonder how much companies over extend themselves, trying to fill every possible niche. As for "acquired tastes". I never really understood the concept. I have never felt a need to induge in something I don't like, at least for the motives of social pressure, or peer standing. The first time I drank beer, I liked it. So much so that I drank it pretty much non-stop for the next 15 years. The same holds true for coffee, in which I still over-indulge.

I just think that the drive to consumerism, to the point of driving people to a product that they don't want, don't need, and don't really even like, is an economically, and socially, unhealthy trend. Consumerism, is good for the economy, and is what drives our system. But ( in my opinion ) when it extends beyond production, beyond meeting basic needs, and realalistic desires, into blind ( "  I buy it because it's there" ) consumption, it starts to have very negative effects such as we are experiencing today. The "I want it all, and I want it now" attitude, along with the "you should, and can have it" message being put forth, is having a detrimental effect on both the economy, and society.

Spoon I agree with your thoughts on consumerism.  If we bought what we need and can use, we would all be better off, but that is not how we humans tick...  As for beer, I too fell in love with it also and still enjoy kicking back a few pints on a regular basis.  The bad news is that beer has not been kind to my waist line....  Time to cut back to Miller Lite...

Indsguiz - actually gun powder tea is named after how it looks, which is like gun powder.  It is not a particularly strong tea, but it has a great flavor.  I also enjoy a variety of teas, both green and black, but usually settle down with the milder green teas and some of the Indian varieties.

Bug I like my beer too, alot,
Drank many where it was hot.
Evan smoked a bong,
as I watched for Vietcong.
Cancer didn,t kill me,
but I also like green tea.
So I,ll drink a beer for you,
And for me.
