First some background...

Ive been pondering events that have transpired in my early days of archery season. Typically we all hear that we shouldnt use estrous scents early in the season. Well, in my younger days, before archery i was out for the squirrel opener. I just happened to have some estrous scent from the previous year in my coat(gel form). I squirted some on the log which i was sitting and not 30 minutes later in walked a GIANT 8pt. Fast-forward two years and in the same location on a day which it was almost 90, early season i pulled the same trick with a liquid scent. I got discouraged by the bugs and quickly concluded i was wasting my time. As i brought my climber down a buck caught my eye, another monster and i was only 5ft off the ground, he busted me before i ever pulled off the shot.

I plan to try this again this year and im inviting anyone who wishes to join in to please do so.

Heres how this will work, to be included you must try this at least one morning, or evening from Oct 11->Oct 18(sat->sat). Chose your favorite estrous scent and either create a drag or place wicks/bombs in your hunting area containing your estrous scent. If youre skeptical about doing this at one of your stand sites, just move on. Theres no place in this for fear of blowing it. Hunt your stand as you normally would with the estrous scent and report your findings. Did the buck you dreamed of show up? Smaller bucks? How did doe's react? And a final analysis of what you did.

An example would look like.

Date: Oct 11
Terrain: Thicket
Deer Sighted : 3?
Scent Used: Code Blue/Tinks/Docs (whatever)
Scent Dispersal: Dragged in and then hung OR put in a scrape... you get the picture

Notes:
Doe's that blew hard and immediately exited the area. Small bucks appeared at random then the big boy showed up.

Photo:

AGAIN... please only try this if youre not concerned about possibly ruining a spot. My findings tell me this works and I just read an article that confirmed whats been rolling through my mind for almost a week. I plan to try it more then once, I will report back. Join in if you wish.

Thanks,
Jeremy

Tell ya what if you help and...

You submit a photo of a kill, timestamped in the given timeframe using this method

AND...

Your buck is the biggest of all submitted ...

Deemed to be a faithful representation by the majority of all entered in the research...

Wins two dozen flies
tied by yours truely for either Erie tribs or Spring Fed Creeks or a Combination of BOTH.

Think of it like a mini big buck contest with more restraints. Also, this is the lull between the beginning and the rut. What do you have to lose but maybe a couple hours on stand. At best, you walk away with a nice buck and two dozen flies.

Ill bump it up when we get back to the date.

I appreciate the help in determining if im crazy or not. Could blow that whole theory out of water and we may revolutionize how people think about the LULL of archery season.

In the event everyone fails to produce a buck, all names thrown in a hat and selected winner gets the flies.

I'm in.  Although I would like to see you add a category of a hunt from that same stand without the scent to see how bucks reacted?

We all know thats about location and playing the winds. This is one of two things... dumb ass luck... or new findings.

How bout this... kill a buck from the same stand, in the same week AFTER using the scent and ill hook that person up with 2 dozen flies... this one has no default, either someone wins it by killing a buck or no one gets it.

I'll give this a try too... can't hurt since I've not bagged a buck yet and looking for any advantage to get one.  Interesting idea too.

Looking forward to seeing what happens, and reading everyones posts.  A couple years ago sombody shot a nice 9pt on the first day of archery, said he used the can bleat call 3 times and the buck came trotting in toward his stand.  No proof, just saw the pic and the caption.

I will be hunting 2B, maybe a day in 2A during that week.  I will post the results.  Plan on using Knight and Hales doe estrous with a drag rag in and hung from a tree near my stand.

k Jerm.

I'll be huntin' 4D, maybe day or two in 4A and 2G.

I'll be using my own pi$$.  Got some cameras on a few mock scrapes as we speak.  Maybe a few dumb ones will smile for the camera.
