Yesterday, I watched a steelie surface in machester hole a couple of times.  Was he eating something off of the top?  He would just turn upward and then push just his head out of the water with his mouth open.  I saw some midges coming off, but do they really bother with those little things?

Sometimes they are definitely feeding on something. Not sure if they are always taking something though.  They will eat a dry fly.

Water was probably too warm, and he was poking his nose out for some fresh air.

Or he was eating a bug.

Loopy might be right about "sipping" air, i donno

I am sure they'll rise to eat bugs though.

saw it years ago in gin clear water.

i watched several steelies in a run one time.
they're were  hanging still in the run and  every now and then would slide over a 6 to 10 inches and sip something off the top

I know many of us have had steelies rise and bite our float/indicators too.
years ago, I actually played one for 5 to 10 seconds once.
He wouldn't LET GO of my plastic float LOL

A large portion of their diet while in the lake, are Spiny Waterfleas.

mgolf,
Yes they do feed on the surface.  I have taken at least one steelhead on a dry fly.  May even go that way for the "One Fly" this year.  That would be the nth degree:  Steelhead on a dry on bamboo.

Well Jack.  It does make sense to go with a dry for the one fly since you most likely won't lose it like you would an egg pattern fishing the bottom.  And plus that would look bad ass with the bamboo.

Nice side bet for the One Fly...everybody that wants to, throw $10.00 in to a hat and fish with a dry.

There was an article in the Pa Angler a few years back about taking them on dries, never tried it, bu that would be neat.

Gentlemen,
Here's my personal take on the dry fly matter.  First the fly would have to be fairly good sized; #8 or 10, and probably a terrestrial;  black ant or hopper but I may use a wulff or a large adams, possibly a large stone.  I'm thinking adams or stone.  It should be fished just like for trout and heavily dressed to get it to float pretty high.  The fish I have seen hitting floats hit some pretty big stuff so I would guess size might matter.  I'll definately try the dries before the "One Fly" and then decide.  Anybody else have any input or ideas/suggestions?

Jack,

How about a classic steelhead dry like a bomber or even a foam gurgler type thing thant you could skate across the water?  I just wonder how many fish will look at a fly that is drifting natuarally.  Just an idea.

mgolf92,
They work well in Washington and Oregon but I've never tried one here in the tribs.  Work in Michigan too.  Just never even tried them here.  Now that you mention it you almost never see some of the stuff that works out west being use here.  Here we keep going smaller and smaller and out west it sems big is the thing.  And here i am breaking my own mantra for big fish on the Juniata or the Letort "Go Big".  I would guess that if they hit a streamer dead drifted then they might hit a dry.   Time to "speriment" when I get up there.

Mgolf,
I think he was being cocky, they do it to me all the time. Steelhead and squirrels are always mocking me. Cocky b*stards!

If only we had a ton of cohos running the tribs.  Those bombers would definitely be in my fly box.

Sometimes when they are not getting enough D.O., or acclimating to a temperature they will do this. Its common when we stock hatchery trout to have them cruising and surfacing near the top till they adjust. Inexperienced fellas assume they are watching a feeding frenzy and start beating the surface with dry fly patterns to no avail. That said, its really hard to know WHAT that steelie was doing. Even with the creeks low, the moving water should have enough D.O., and if he's been in the creek long at all, he's probably adjusted to the water temp, even if it is warmer than he'd like it. Any chance he'd been caught and released just prior to you seeing him, ie. any other guys around that hole? That's would be my best guess without seeing it myself.
