Reorganizing into a new vest and preparing for my first trip this season. I envy all who can even swing by a local mouth for a few casts right now.  Wont have the time to come up for a few weeks.  I have like many become a fisherman who refuses to carry anything that cannot be put into my vest.  No bucket, no net (unless i'm on the wall the 1-2 times a year I pay a visit, it's just rude to expect someone else to net your fish, even there).  I have my 6 or so varieties of baits and lures, but wondering about what others keep in their vests and some of the bizarre stuff that gets stashed in as well.  Here's mine- 8 years running and every pocket is the same...maybe some newbies can get an idea of some things to carry as well.  I am a noodle rodder as you can tell by the selections.  Nice to be able to throw a spoon and a beadhead pheasant tail under a float with the same rod.

Back pocket- camera, stringer, electronic scale (used 1-2 times a year), whistle (not a good place for it if I get into trouble, mainly for boating)

Top left pockets- skein (double bagged) and single eggs

Bottom left large pocket- jig box (about 200 too many inside), misc. lures that get used once a season (trout worms, tiny green glitter power nuggets)

Bottom left small- floats, single and treble hooks, sinkers, other terminal tackle

Top right- cell phone and keys pocket, tiny flashlight, measuring tape

Bottom right large- box of spoons, spinners, flatfish, assorted small minnow lures (try one in the lake from sept- early nov), fly container- nymphs, san juan worms, spawn and egg flies, assorted bags of foam strips (easiest tie ever, single hook, wrap around a few times, voila, skein fly- breathes nice)

Bottom right small- pliers, folding knife, line clippers

The same zippers seem to go on all my vests, jig pocket and pliers pocket.  Skein pocket gets pretty crusty as well.  Hardly use the stuff but carry just in case of murky fast water.  Also a great giveaway.  Just one way of using all of a fish that I decide to take home for the smoker.  Nasty to use but works and why throw a small resource away.

I dont carry much backup supply such as line or any items that may help me in ways other than catching a fish as I probably should.

Sidepoint- Can anyone recommend a good vest with many pockets?  Hint- Dont bother with Gander Mountain vests, zippers and seems go on every one within a year.  Tried 2.  2nd one was the last.

There is not enough room on this board to list all the "important" stuff I have crammed in my vest...  I have way tooooo many fly boxes, floats, leaders, tippet material, weights, hooks, etc...

Thanks for starting this thread as it has reminded me that I need to clean my vest out....

No vest, but I usually throw a bag of sunflower seeds in.  Also, a head light. I put my cell phone in a ziplock bag just in case I should fall in, too.  You know, an ounce of prevention and all that.  Sometimes a computer printout topo map of the area goes in the pockets as well.  If itll be a longer trip (in a canoe, or a long day trip), I usually carry a backpack with everything in it, and for these trips, I always include a roll of poo tickets as well.

Lower Right... Couple of pillboxes of eggsacs
Other lower right... Half a dozen various floats, float caps
Lower left... Altoids box full of hooks in wrapper. Mostly Gamakatsu and Dai Ichis #8 down to 14s
Other lower left... Another Altoid box for split shots and barrel swivels
Upper left ... assortment of fluorocarbon leader 4, 6 and 8 pound test
Upper right... Aleve (my arm gets sore)
Inside right... Flies I took out of fish
Inside left ... Cigars, matches
Back pocket... Piece of panty hose, baggies. If I need eggs I give the fish to a Russian, keep the eggs, strain them in the panty hose, and bag them till I can get them on ice quickly.
Hanging on the front... Scissors, hemostat

In the truck ... cooler, juice, beer, food, more smokes, backup rod and reel, enough crap to open a centerpin store.

Nowhere ... Cell phone, stringer, camera

OK you had to ask.
Seems I put my vest away in the same satchel I stored my waders in when I stopped fishing last year.  When  I saw your post I dug them out and. . . . . I will be throwing mine away.  Seems I left some fresh skein, some fresh eggs, some waxies, and two jars of Mikes salmon eggs and 4 pieces of bubble gum in my vest when I sealed it in a plastic bag and stored it in the loft of my non-airconditioned garage.  But for some reason I did take all my fly gear out and put it in another vest.  (maybe for a trip to the Cumberland?).  Lets just say that the old vest was burned, and the neighbors asked about the smell.  But at least I did store it in an airtight bag.  And I'm Soooo glad I had the waders in a different bag.

I keep just about everything you all said in my chest pack and back pack. One more thing is about 6oz. of the top shelf stuff to help keep me warm in da cold months. And to Cold nice suggestion about the cell phone in a zipplock. I also might wrap it in some cloth to absorb the shock if i were to drop it. Mine is always off when im fishin !!! I dont need my peace and quiet being one with the stream interrupted by the ringging of a phone ,but if i need to use it i can turn it on and it will still be dry.

Basically I take as little as possible. I carry my very small split shots, hemostats, single eggs, hooks, floats, fly box is usually what i take stream fishing. Now when I am in the lake i take a jar of powerbait a hook and some hemos and thats just about it because the car is not far away. I usually just stuff it all into my waders anyway when I am at the lake. Maybe a cell phone or some tippet material now that I am going to fly fish. Also usually a spool of some different lb. test line.

Don't forget the medicated wipes...nothing worse than an itchy brown eye while in waders..

I try to keep it simple. I used to have sooooooo much sh!t in my vest my back would hurt after an hour. Now I just keep flys, flouro, weights, indicators, nippers and forceps....oh and a flask of JD, for emergencies

easy there . if you actually had to use that thing youd lay an egg, fall on your arse and mess up the inside of your waders.

Ever since I had to use a nail file cut off the barb on a wooly bugger that I had pushed through my thumb- multipurpose tool, with wire cutter. Also
first aid kit with mercurochrome, bandaids, ibuprofen, tums, vicodin,
other assorted prescription drugs. Also, extra pair of glasses. Of course,
in 5 years, have never needed any of this, but better safe than sorry.
One thing I have used is the little flashlight I carry, since the time I got stuck at the mouth of 7 mile on a pitch black night, and had to basically feel my way up the creek.

if you want to carry lures with you, hook bonnets from bass pro shops are the way to go they clip right off and cover the barbs so they wont get stuck in your vest

I hear you on the amount of crap.  More spoons and maybe 30 1.5-1.75 flatfish lures then I could ever use.  Each time I go in that box I reach for the same ones.  My jig box has 200 jigs in it and I use the same 10 over and over.  Guess I do break out new patterns to see if the work.....last year a peanut butter and jelly jig was money and a new addition to the starting varsity squad.  Not even joking.  Brown bucktail and purple tinsel.

Spawn sacks, and three boxes of flies. A small spool of vanish, indicaters. A hanky for my runny nose or a sudden emergency.
Hand warmers and I even carry a rope for that one fish I keep to smoke. Oh ya, smoke.
