This weekend has left me slightly curious as to what the weirdest thing people have caught a trout on. First time i really thought about it after a bizarre scenario at dunlap lake. So im fishing for bass throwing a LC pointer and yo-yo'ing a 3/4 oz spro aruku shad (rattle trap) with no success. I decide to start a steady retrieve with the trap using little wrist flicks to get it to flash when bam! a little 12 inch rainbow slams the front treble. I dont know how he even got the dam thing in his mouth. I thought i was going to break his jaw trying to pull the treble out.

I've caught trout on little rapala j-5's and husky jerks but have never seen or heard of one going after a 3/4oz rattle trap. maybe next time i go trout fishing i should bring some dd22's or maybe 10 inch ribbontail worms!

Any bizarre stories feel free to share. Im interested in hearing what other pellet heads have mistaken as edible.

I caught one on a Roostertail once, and it had a purple bass worm inside it...

I got several on a bare hook, but other than that, and a few who tried to eat my bobber, most baits have at least made some sense. They'll try nearly any food product.

I caught a trout on a small pine cone my fly picked up while picking up for another cast.

A ball of powerbait with a mealworm sticking out. I called it an 'icecream cone'

I've tied some horrible flies that have caught fish. For a while I was making woolley bugger type flies that were just ridiculously ugly, but still worked.

That's the second time I've heard that this week...

Well I didn't actually catch the trout (with my rod) but, I saw a trout trying to eat something very interesting once.

About a year ago JLH and I were fishing a central PA limestoner and we found a 20-22" brown with an unusually large meal stuffed down his throat. Upon further inspection we found he had a 8-9" brown trout half way down his throat. The larger fish was very exhausted from trying to shake the smaller fish from his throat since there was no way he could swallow the thing. We caught the larger brown with our hands and removed the smaller fish from his mouth. Amazingly, both fish swam away after the ordeal. What a crazy site to see, I would have never expected to see that in my lifetime.

Maybe I should be tying up some 8-10" brown trout streamers to toss with a 9wt!!

Some pretty off the wall stuff. I always knew bass would eat anything and everything as long as it triggered a reaction. I guess i held the misconception that trout like small, and at least slightly realistic looking stuff. I guess if something is hungry or ****ed off enough it will eat just about anything.

While fishing a muddy Chatahoochie River in Georgia I used a 5" bagely minnow mid depth diver with a rattle in it. After 45 minutes of hearing some serious crap from my boat mates i hooked a beautiful brown just over 27". Fantastic color with brown dots that got to the size of fingernails. That fish towed our boat around. In the muddy water we had no clue what it was till it wore out and came to net. The Georgia boat boys didn't say much about the stupid PA trout fisherman since. I carry big Rapalas and other lures and fish delayed harvest projects during high flow periods. You would be suprised what feeds then.
The weirdest thing i caught a trout on was a bra clasp... don't ask.

How could you post that and think someone is not going to ask for that story, especially on these boards?

On a side note i was fishing buena vista one day wading in between two pretty good looking women which is rare onto itself but i managed to catch a pair of bikini bottoms right in the friggin crotch. I would like to think they enjoyed watching me trying to disect my tube from the crotch pad of these things with a stick and a leatherman but i have a funny feeling they were laughing because i looked like a total jackass.

I was throwing a big x-rap for smallmouth at the back channel dam and caught a 13 inch brown trout.  The lure was nearly half it's size, I couldn't believe it!  That was the first trout I'd ever caught in the Ohio too.

My instances aren't of trout but i am enjoying the humorous catch stories and thought i'd share mine. I caught a decent smallie on a hotdog a couple months ago.

In the summer while catfishing near washington landing i caught two high school girls practicing for the rowing team! They came around the bend rather close to shore, and suddenly my rod bent... Thinking i caught a fish i grabbed my rod, pulled back to set the hook and suddenly the boat was spinning around. My line was tangled up in their ore lock (or whatever it is called on those crew boats). I had to jump in the water to untangle it, all the while drawing the attention of their suddenly alarmed coach. It was pretty funny.. i'm not sure if i am disappointed or relieved that my girlfriend didn't think to grab the camera out of my backpack.

The joke of the day was that they weren't legal size and we had to throw them back!

She didn't get away, not during that trip. Me catching a native trout with that clasp won the bet! Nuffsaid...

I caught quite a few trout on rattle traps several years ago. When I was in college at UPG, I'd fish the upper lake at Twin Lakes almost every day as soon as the ice was off. It always was stocked with trout in the fall and winter back then (12+ years ago). A buddy and I used to throw rattle traps at the dam in the spring and we'd pick up some nice rainbows every now and then on those.

Early last summer on Thorn Creek in Butler County, I saw a 12" brown trout trying to choke down a good sized toad. Took me a few minutes to figure out what he was swimming around with in his mouth, but after about 10 minutes, he gave up and the toad swam off.

Caught a 19" smallmouth on corn while carp fishing on the Juniata and my wife caught a 27" chain pickerel in Dumans Dam on green powerbait, she was reeling in when the lunker hit.

I caught a nice rainbow on a big chunk of chicken liver while catfishing a couple years ago. That was unusual.

i caught some things during my time on that campus...  none fishing related.

to add to the thread on topic.  while technically it's a char, i caught a bunch of lake trout on spinner baits in northern Saskatchewan while targeting pike.  also landed my first seagull on that trip.

haha.  it was a joke.

but always thought about fishing the little stream that runs through campus.  always saw some small fish, likely crick chubs.  threw up in the crick during a spring soccer practice.  guilty of chumming.

Me and a buddy of mine were fishing downtown for catfish one night two summers ago using cut bluegill and he had a hit right off the bat, started fighting it and go it to the wall and i netted it. It was a 4 lb smallie on a cut bluegill head! that was probably the most surprising thing i've ever seen while fishing.
