I do have a question, though...they usually stock mid-day, but last fall they hit the loyalhanna DHALO around 4:30pm. If I'm there when the truck comes, is this a stocking I can help out with? I've never participated in a stocking (watched one at Twin Lakes, but they didnt need help form the public), and I think it'd be interesting to help.

I wouldn't see why not Cold. I've helped with a couple of stream stockings in Butler and Allegheny County. Stream stockings are (from what I've seen anyway) very dependent on volunteers to carry buckets of fish to the crick.

As an added bonus, you can grab a couple buckets and dump 'em into a honey hole while no one else is looking

Thanks!

I'd probably be more apt to dump em into a hole well away from a few of the areas I like to fish. There's some beautiful holdovers in the 'hanna.

No problem, man...in the other thread I was thinking the stockings weren't until november.

I plan to be down there this afternoon. Even if the stocking is already done, I'm going to try to get my buddy down there. He got a fly rod last summer and has been a real trooper: uses it every time we trout or steelhead fish, but still has yet to catch anything with it. Heck, we traded rods once and I caught a nice rainbow on his rod...but aside from having a brown on for a few second (on my 3wt), he's fishless.

Hopefully, I can get him out there today stripping a few flashy buggers past dumb fish so he can break the ice.

I was tying last night and was going to tie up a few more caddis for today...remembered that the stream will be dominated by stockies now...and tied some buggers instead.

Where do you fish Loyalhanna?

I went up there this year and all I saw was a shallow mud bottom stream. I stopped at a bridge by... Oh... That battle field near Idlewild.

I was pretty excited by the posts here but when I got to the stream it was not what I expected.

When did you come? I've been pulling fish out regularly. And there's lots of holdovers this year too. I fish the DHALO...711 to SR2045 (Lady of the Lake)

The dhalo got feesh today. Must have stocked on time, as they were in, and calmed down by the time I got there around 430. Stayed 2 hours and landed 5, and hooked 5 more that managed to throw the hook, and missed the hookset on a few more.

Got 1 holdover on my first cast and man, what a difference between the sure, purposeful rise of the holdover compared to the nervous, hesitant bite from the new fish.

I'd imagine the bite will come easy for another day or two, then they'll get lockjaw for a week or two, then it'll be normal fall trouting from here till the snow sticks.

I fished well up from where they dump em in, but it seemed like they did a good job of getting alot of trout in the water without putting in more than the environment could handle. They'll spread out over the next month until they all find their places.

I helped throw some buckets of trout in today, the fish commission got there around 2:30.  Caught around 15, it's very easy catchin some uneducated fish.

Yup. Should have had at least 9-10, but thats what you get for not checking to see if your hook point got bent.

Maybe up in those private club waters, but in that heavily pressured section, they smarten up quick.

Just sayin'

There's a 1-2 week lull there too usually, between 'hit anything' and '****, I'm hungry' when they get adjusted to eating things that arent brown pellets.

I've seen it happen in that stream for 2 fall stockings and 2 springs of multiple stockings.

ehhh you'd be suprised, the club fish get real smart real fast.

They only eat the pellets that fall out of the feeder and no insects...
Match the PA brown fly hatch when they get lockjaw...

King, I got there around 1230 and fished right behind the old folks home.  I stayed there for a while and eventually worked my way down below the foot bridge, then I came back up and fished behind the old folks home for a couple more hours.  I ended up leavin around 4ish.

Any fish by the three man-made rock dams by the pulloff??

Fished there on Sunday before the stocking and there was a few in there that came to hand...including a 5 inch escapee from a tributary upstream

If it was a brown it probably came from Mill Creek...

Relax Jim, they only stocked 15,000 fingerlings (literaly) last summer and a few thousand this year  ... They've been doing it for a few years now.

Lets just say they haven't made it to the 90's yet.
