Its not the fanciest but i sometimes carry a graphite driver golf club shaft without the head. It works fine and is super light. I've had a simms folding one in the past and like the golf club better so i sold the simms and kept the club shaft. It also meets the second part you asked about as it was free.

To protect the tip i expoxied on a fired pistol shell that fit over the tip.

William Joseph makes a nice stick for around $50.  I've only used it once up at Salmon River but it worked great for crossing the deep fast water as well as the hike in through the woods.

I went to A Walgreens and got an actual aluminum cane, and I screwed a stainless hex head screw into the tip.  Put it on my vest with a retractor used for nets.  Works like a charm.

I use a solid wood wading staff that I bought at kettle creek for about 18 dollads & it is great except you have to put a coat of finish on it every year

I just bought a new Leki telescoping and shock absorbing walking stick at a thrift store for $4
I was going to give it to my father but he said that he already has a hiking stick.
Then I though I might sell it on ebay when I saw what they were selling for $45 to $75
After playing with it I decided to keep it.
I like the adjustable length, spring inside and the rubber tip is very non-slip

Make sure you get a hiking staff that is adjustable/telescopic and has the shock-absorber feature. It really saves wear and tear on your shoulder.
Wal-mart has them for under $20.
Once you use it in the creek you'll never be without one. They really help keep you safe, upright and dry. It's like having a third leg.

Tippy,  Don't you believe me?  Or do you just trust your fisherie buddies more than the Commandos?

I like the Orvis folding staff that I picked up at the TU meeting 2 years ago.  Cost me $1 for a raffle ticket.

Old hockey stick, made of ash and very strong. Before someone states the obvious or busts my chops for not stating it, cut the curved side off.

A broom handle with a hole drilled in it attached to your belt. It floats behind you when wading, so it doesn't get in the way. Alawys within easy reach and you don't have to open it, you can just grab it. A little low tech, but it works. Or a hiking staff that look like a ski pole, you can get them for under $20 about anywhere and they work to, I have used them in the past. I wouldn't pay the money that Cabelas or Orvis wants for one, they are like $80.
