Floated yesterday from Franklin to the Fishermans Cove ramp.  Fishing was good but found the shuttle vehicle we had parked had had its catalytic converter stolen by some lowlife scumbag!

The victim had parked his 10 year old green mini-van up near the road and within sight of anyone going by but the bad guy(s) still had time to cut the bolts off and steal the converter.  Fortunately we were able to strap up the remaining muffler and, with no phone signals there, headed to Mauers to call the PSP.  They took a report and feel they will catch these guys eventually but for now they recommend no one park there.

Not sure if anyone saw anything unusual there yesterday (it happened between 9:30 and 5 PM but most likely in the morning ) but please pass the word to anyone wanting to leave a vehicle there.

Just a heads up and I can assure you we'll be armed during future trips on the river.

Platinum, Palladium and Rhodium prices are skyrocketing just like other metals.

Thieves used to break out a side window, steal a $200 car stereo and sell it for $25 costing the owner around $400 to fix.

They are getting smarter.
No one would notice a converter missing until the vehicle is started-No obvious broken glass.

A few years ago I worked for New Eagle Iron and never needed to  pay anyone for an obviously good converter.

Now I would bet that they are offered almost every day to scrap yards.

I was told these guys are paid, by scrappers, $60 - $80 each then the scrappers resell them for double that.  I thought Walmart filmed everything in their stores and parking lot.  Those guys might be on camera.

I would buy 55 gallon barrels full of converters sometimes even a pickup truck filled with them.

I paid $15 -$25 each for most-some of the larger ones from imports I gave more for.

Every few weeks a guy from Ohio would come around and buy all of them for $25-$90 each
Most were in the $30 to $40 range

This was 6 to eight years ago.

A scrapyard that buys one at a time can guess that 80% of the time they are stolen.
Some people do replace their own exhaust and do bring in one at a time.

Scrap yards also need to have a persons ID before payment.
I wrote Drivers license # and plate # on the slips
It would not be hard for the police to ask to see their records and most will show them without a warrant.
The problems with this idea is that it is a low priority and they are too lazy to bother
and the sale might not be on the book.

Dead on Marty, but if some citizen makes a stink they will have to do the legwork. Keep after them Kayak,be a pain in the ass. And you can request for all reports of thefts, auto break-ins(which your issue may be classified as), and auto vandalism in a certain zone or radius from the incident occurance. Not sure what the State Police classification is but it is your tax dollars.

Thats a shame, Kayak. Thats also a lil to close to home for me. Better quit leaving my keys in my car and keep alert. Some converters are going for $150 and thats to middlemen. With the economy me the way it is, thievery is on the rise. This is a small town around here (fishermans cove area), I know most of the people that hang out down there, word will get around.

I've even had gas stolen out of lawn mowers and tractors.  Here's a good revenge.  Put out a can marked "gas" and make up a mix of gasoline, moth chrystals, and sugar for in it.   Let it be stolen.

Next time have someone sit up in the weeds and wait for them.

A while back steelhead fishing my truck was broken into on crooked creek. I use to leave the passenger door unlocked with a $10.00 dollar bill sitting in the center of the truck. BUT on the passenger seat I would set a 330 conabear (beaver trap) on the top of the seat with some newspaper over it. No one ever took the money.

That's what I am hoping.  There are lots of us who can pass the word.  I'm going to email the fish commission people in Harrisburg today, just so they have a record of this happening and can possibly spread the word.

In talking with the PSP trooper he acknowledged there is no serial number on these.,  A better business and cheaper for the public would be a business that engraved names and phone numbers on these.  Yes, they can be scraped off but that would make it obvious.

Yep, meth addicts do alot of thefts, but actually in this area it is the heroin and pill addicts. All they do is steal and scap to fund their habits.

I don't think meth is a problem in Pittsburgh but crack, heroin and pills like vicoden and Oxycontin
Crystal meth is not popular in this area but methadone that is given away in clinics is sold on weekends because the places give takehome doses forSat and Sun.

Extacy, Viagra and GHB are popular in some places but is probably not a financial problem.

I have spent many years working in bars and after hours clubs then been forced to go to anger management and have see it all in these places.

The anger management was for throwing a guy out a second story window that robed my truck.

It is a big problem in Pittsburgh, and all over rural PA.

What does scap mean?  Or did you mean to write scrap?  Just wondering if scap is something new.

If you set them up with a sabotaged gas can don't try the sugar trick it doesn't work. Saw that on myth busters. Use a plastic can put in about 2 cups of bleach and fill with gas. The bleach will corrode the gas tank and make it rust terribly. Wont cause any motor damage but wrecks the hell out of the fuel system...

Wouldn't it be easier to fill an old gas can with kerosene for these thieves?  If I recall they won't get very far once that's put into their car.

I am from the Franklin area and will relate this bit of extreme homemade justice. It was refered to me by a fella from Dempsytown. Seems this local oil man was having nightly withdrawls from his gas storage tank. He was a amature chemist and cooked up some nitro to shoot some wells. I guess he had some left over and being his storage tank was nearly empty decided to give the theaves some additive. Well the fellow that related this to me was loafing in a local garage when amature chemist comes in and asks if they had heard of anyone blowing an engine lately. They told him so &so had engine problems. Well he says "no I mean BLOWN engine"!  Then they both remembered hearing about so&so having the cylinder wall blown wide open in so& so's car. Well amature chemist says thats who I'm looking for and tels them the particulars.
When I heard this story I was laughing to hard to get any more info.
