Do you think the reports posted about the Edward John's catches are true? I have fished near them several times and done well but other times I haven't seen the people on the big boat catching many. I was wondering if people were reporting great catches to attract more paying customers??

Have noticed that myself, friends have tried the trip and had good and bad experiences. I would thunk your observations are correct!

Do you mean that YOU actually quit fishing and was watching the people on the EJ? Or did you have your limit already, like most of them did.

I've fished the EJ and had my limit in an hour and a half and sat back and watched the rest get theirs. Maybe it doesn't happen every time they go out, but if people go just to get a limit, they're missing out on a lot of other things to enjoy out there.
I've seen reports from both boats, EJ and V, that they had slow days. Dont let those reports stop you from enjoying a day on the water.

I fishing the ej many times and the victory once and most people catch many!!!! ive limited out lots ans so has my wife! We did have one slow day but only one. Some one is always catching fish! Personally i think its the best 30 bucks out there considering coat of gas bait ect!!!
In closing chauncy is correct there is more than just catchin though, Many of the folks out there donat own a boat or have access, and when they are catching fish its fun to just sit and watch! Every single time ive been out ive had a blast.

Question, if and when you limit out early on perch out there, do any of you ever take any harnesses or Erie Dearies with you to try and snag into an eye while you are out there? Are there ever any incedental catches of walleyes while targeting the perch? How about smallies?

Hysterically, if you have a large schools of perch you will also find walleye, muskie (if not too deep), lakers and salmon in the area. That's why the perch schools bunch up so much : : : to frighten off predators. The biggest problem I'd see is trying to get a baited harness down through all the perch to the eyes. Maybe casting a large lure or spinner bait out to the sides of the EJ and then reeling in would work. But there again; catching and fighting one big toothy critter and tangling lines might not make you too popular with the other fishermen. Just my 2 Cents.

While fishing for perch you can catch a stray walleye, the occasional steelhead, and last year my uncle caught a nice largemouth on one of the trips. He went up friday and limited out so they are hitting pretty well out there right now.

I just fished the Edward John on Sunday 7am-2pm. The bite turned on at 10am, and myself and the three others in my party limited out. As easy as perch are to catch, I missed alot of hits and saw many other people do the same. Can be a little tricky with a large weight. The first fish of the day was a beautiful 7 lb walleye. Saw some silver bass caught as well. The bite did turn off around 11, and we probably should have moved locations, but the captain was very busy cleaning fish.
That was the only negative I took from it. Saw a group of people struggle to catch one fish per hour in the last few hours.

I was actually gonna take the trip next week. Thats a sweet price. I had my Chessie swimming between beaches 9 and 10 sunday nite and there sure was a crowd of boats out there. Looked to me like they are definately putting people on fish.

Is the cleaning of the fish included in the price of $30.00 or is there an extra charge for that part of it ?

I dont know anything about the Edward John but what i can tell you is that Sunday was the best day of perch fishing i have ever had in my life. I took my parents on thier first fishing trip on Erie. I left Walnut at 12 noon and headed north till I found everybody. 4.5 miles north in about 50 ft of water. I bought 2 dozen emeralds (which seemed to die before I got to the boat ramp) and 2 dozen fat heads. I used a 3 hook rig. We caught 60 fish in under 2 hrs. My dad had 2 triple, I had 1 myself. My mother had caught a double and lost 2 emeralds when I told her to wait a minute and I would rebait her hooks. She told my she would try just the one emerald. She caught 2 perch and one was on the bare hook. If I didnt see it I wouldnt have believed it. I didnt get much fishing time myself but enjoyed seeing them laughing and having fun. We opnly need 2 more fish to fill the ticket. When I decided to try to fish for them my top hook was caught up in to my snap swivel. I still had 2 hooks left with bait on them. I figuered what the heck all I need is 2 fish. When reeled up I had 3 fish. i dont know how the top fish hit that hook that was tangled in the swivel without any bait. But it did. We used all the dead emeralds first. Put the hook through the eyes nad the through the tail. Didnt lose as much bait that way. Again what a day! Memories for a life time for sure.
So I would have to say the Edward John or who ever has to be telling the truth if they say that they are catching perch.

They charge 50 cents a fish. Seems kinda high, but once you've put in a full day fishing, it's kinda nice to let someone else do it. You can take em off the boat and do them yourself, though.

As for me, I was on the Victory Saturday morning and we did very very poorly. I think I caught two yellows, one white, and a smallie. My Dad caught one white and some gobies. Nobody limited out or came close to it for that matter. The NE wind didn't help at all and the boats around us weren't catching anything either. It was still a good time though.

Sunday was a different story. I was out on my buddies boat and we got into them pretty well in the same hole from the day before. The EJ was getting into them also as I was watchin fish getting plucked out of the water on that boat about 100 yards off our bow. 9 lbs of fish in about 1.5-2 hours, so not too shabby.

As a regular on the EJ,(season ticket holder) and a frequent poster to this site about the fishing on the EJ, I report what I did on the nights I have fished if I think it needs to be reported. There is no way any of the reports can be lied about as there are way to many people from this site on board each trip, not to mention both of the head boats are usually within 3-400 yds of the other and watching how each is doing. Right now it just seems the reports are questionable because the perchin has been great.

Has anyone ever taken a young child on one of the head boats? I was thinking about taking my 5-year-old out on the EJ. The action should keep him interested. Just wondering if anyone else had taken their young kids. Is there an age limit?

sagebrush,,,, there is no problem with taking the kids out, I have seen some of the kids with the big wide eyes after catching a few and then there are the ones who just want to run around and play if the kid runs around and plays they usually become an a big pain to the others that are fishing and I do know a few people who will not tolerate it and it could make you uncomfortable, as it should. Just make sure they are ready to go.and I have seen many people get sick out there and the boats arent coming back if someone does get sick, you might want to be ready for that too,even on the calmest of days

By all means, take the kid! They are the future of our sport. Everytime I go out, I take as many people as I can.

Now that I think of it, if you take the 5 year old, take him/her a nice pair of gloves for handling the fish. Perch can cut the heck out of your hands and fingers. Very sharp! Enjoy!

From experience with my own 5 year old,,,,,make a big production of "building" straps for any extra equipment he will want to pick up. i.e. a neck lanyard for clippers, a rope on a belt for a cheap leatherman or pair of needle nose pliers. My tool bills went way down once I started this!!! lol
