I'm deciding on making a 5 hour drive from Harrisburg on Sunday night. The creeks down here are blown out. I figure the rain/snow up there got the steel all horned up for a big run. I'm just not sure if Elk will be fishable by Monday daybreak. Any insight would be appreciated.
Thanks

save your gas bro, made the drive from Pittsburgh today and it really wasn't worth it.  We hooked into some fish, landed a few but the streams are low and clear, fish are extremely condensed.  Did a lot of walking and fish just weren't willing to cooperate with the conditions.

I was up today (Sunday) on Elk.
It's running clear, but flow and level was good

I didn't look at the weather, but don't think they're predicting any rain, so ALL the creeks will surely be fishable and on the clear side

as far as numbers, that's a subjective thing.
We found plenty enough to have a good time.
if you're expecting to trip over fish everywhere you go, that won't happen.
Matter of fact, it's not going to happen at all this season.
I predicted larger numbers than normal early in the season.
But i was wrong..... it's not going to happen

as far as "the bite" that's a "luck of the draw timing thing"
Just cause they were a tough bite for many today, doesn't mean that will hold true tomorrow.
You just never know

You've heard the old saying,

"You shudda been here yesterday"

that's the way fishing is in general  and steelie fishing is no exception.
they might bite any junk you toss at 'em, or they might be tight lipped, and  anything in between

if it's windy tonight or tomorrow, leaves WILL be an issue.
Leaves were some what of a PITA today, but not too terrible

Rain?  Snow?  All creeks on the east side are low clear, and some fishless.

I have a buddy that was up there today and we was getting hookups when no one else was, according to him. He was using various types of blue or purple things on his fly rod. Color is the key right now... try blue/purple
