Guys, the weather is changing and the bass boat is all but parked for the year. I have been thinking about this and I want to try my hand at fly fishing. Seems like fun, although I have never once tried it, tied a fly, caught a fish on one, or so much as touched a fly rod. What do you recommend I start with as far as rod and reel? Where in the Elizabeth area would be a good stream to practice? Where can I buy flies, and what type would be good to start with?
Thanks for any help you may offer.

I was up at Dunbar sighting my rifles in the other day.  I talked to a couple fellas, they were doing well in the FFO section.  I saw many fish in the few areas I looked.  I'm a novice fly guy myself, the bigger project pools on the creek looked like they'd be easy casting for a beginner.

Here is what I'd do. I'd wait a couple of months, say Christmas time. Then go to a dept store like K mart and ask if they have any. You'll get it cheaper because its off season. Then buy a starter kit, I got mine for 30.00. Then in the spring start casting in the yard. tie a piece of yarn to the end of your line. Now practice where you want to place it. Then take it out on the open water. Good luck.

I agree with utipis

No need to spend $200+ for a setup to learn how to do it and see if you like it. Get a cheap combo and get used to casting. Flies to use are going to vary tremendously. For this time of year, dry flies are pretty much worthless (think may-aug for them). I would go with nymphs and the like. If you are going for river bass, streamers, wooly boogers, and minnow like presentations work well in fast water.

A great guy to get hold of is norm289

He is very helpfull and nice. He can get you pointed in the right direction.

Let me know when you want to get out and give it a shot, plenty of rods you can try,and an arsennal of flies to bomb the fish with.Try it and if you like it,then buy the rod&reel, thats the cheap end,if you get the fly tying disease there is no end to matterials you "will have to have".As far as casting goes, the roll cast is all you need 90% of the time.

I forgot to add one thing. Until you learn how to use the rod correctly. Your going to have a sore hand & blisters on your thumb. But its a good pain LOL! And once you get to learn that the fly rod is an extension of your arm. No more pain!
