I was bored and went for a drive the other night. I had heard about Swatara creek before but hadn't got a chance to check it out.

Well I drove out Union Deposit rd till I got to the town of Union Deposit and came upon the creek. So I pulled over to check it out. There were fish rising/jumping everywhere. I had the fly rod so I grabbed it and went down to the stream. It was about 8:30 and getting pretty dark. I caught 8 fall fish in 20mins and that's it. Is there anything in this creek other than that? Smallies? Trout? It looked like nice water and had really good flow.

I'm going back tomorrow evening when I have my popper flies and more daylight to work with and try it again.

Tim,
you were at the Hanover street bridge.  That area gets hammered cause it's such easy access.  The upper portions of the creek have better quantity of smallmouth but of smaller size.  The lower portion below where you were has less numbers but bigger size.  PM coming about where to go.

Got out again last night... hammered the smallies. Spinners and top water plugs. Though they were all around 8-10" nothing of any size.

Go fishing for muskie starting about the month of March or Ice out and fish the tributaries like spring creek and Manada not to mention many smaller ones.  I guess they are going to change the name now to Swatara River!.  This is a good creek to wade from hanover bridge to Fiddler elbow rd.

Fished the swatty last night. Between my buddy and I we caught 40 combined all smallies and 3-16" fall fish. My buddy caught a nice 3lb smallmouth. Can't wait till the musky turn on. There has to be some monsters in that creek. There's some beautiful water here.

Saw these ladies sippin from the waters edge...

My buddy with a nice small mouth

Are you floating above the dam or below the dam ?   and the 8"-15" fallfish will be a prime target for the musky.

Wayyyy below the dam.

How would you rig an 8-12" fall fish? Through the nostrils or middle of back? And wound it so it can't swim around like crazy?

They sure are plentiful enough are there any laws about keeping them for bait etc etc...?

No laws against using anything you catch as bait that I know of. I frequently catch 6 inch to 8 inch fallfish for striper bait. Stay alive a long time (longer than shad or alewife, even trout.)

I believe the PFBC have a 8" rule for using fish for bait.  The best way I found to rig a fall fish is anyway you can keep a hook exposed. We have threaded these fish (hardy ) (fallfish) and also lip hooked them so the hook will jab quick.  The more flash they make the better.

I went up to Swatara Creek acouple days ago around Swatara State Park and overall the fishing was slow for any trout anglers. In hopes of maybe catching a few small natives we headed to the only access points we could manage to find and wetted our lines for 4 hours or so. Not a bad day for any crappy/bass fisherman, in total about 20. A combination of Crappy, Smallmouth, Shiners, pumpkin seed, and suckers. Found one half decent trout hole, run with riffle 3 yards upstream, deep hole, shaded, and nothing! I'd suggest if anyone is around Swatara and looking for trout I'd maybe look for Trout Run.. Just the name makes me think there may be a few fish in there, though stocked.
