Reel-  I'm all over striper season.  If you ever need somebody to go out in the morning, I would love tagging along.  I'm usually stuck on shore. Give me a message when the herring get here. I live 10 minutes from the mouth of the Poestenkill, so I check it regularly in April to see when they arrive.  Meanwhile, TROUT TIME almost here! That'll keep me busy a few weeks.

here is a very important date to remember: April 15th
traditionally that is when we see the first signs of herring in the creek (just north of Hudson). April 15th , the big boat 29 footer will be in the water at the marina.
with the river already cleaned out from the winter all this should be excellent conditions for an early striper start.
last year I told myself I would not use the preferred method of using bait until I caught a fish on the fly. After 3 weeks of nada I choked and put the herring on only to catch a 12 lb fish on the first outing.
this year I will stand fast and fish the trib ONLY with fly rod until it happens or I bail in search of the great brook trout.

FYI:
NO shad can be kept this year, C&R only....

According the Stripers 247 message board, herring are ALREADY being caught upstate. Not any big run, but when they're catching 'em as far north as New Baltimore in March, it has to be a good sign for an early run. Water still very cold, but I like what I see, we had a nice gradual melt.  The trout streams also should have a banner year.  I am PSYCHED!

Small ones (schoolies) are showing up as far north as Catskill
today i scouted the trib behind my house looking for herring. None were seen but a few eager beaver boaters gave it a try. I did not see anything being caught. Tomorrow i will get serious and cast the flyrod.
it was a beautiful day

Checked the Poestenkill creek saturday, and I'm glad to report the herring are now here at the north terminus of the tidal river. Probably the early ones (bluebacks?) but the stripers are sure to be right behind them.  The season is now upon us fellas, get out your striper gear. REEL I'll be getting in touch soon.
