Hello to all! Just an update on Sportsman's warehouse. The fishing department has been reduced by 6800 items. They have lost 3 aisles in the store. The clothing department has taken over those three aisles! I went down the other night to pick up some bucktail. They had 7 or 8 different colors. They now have 3. White, Red, and Olive. Also, wanted to get crystal meth. Found out that right now they will no longer carry the product. It was packed up and shipped back to Utah. Poor sales was the reason. So the corporate people who were there said! Cabela's may be winning the big box war? Was impressed when they first opened but not so now!

The Sportsmans warehouse is a sad excuse of a tackle store IMHO.  I went there a few months ago and everything I wanted they didn't stock.  You are correct when you said they need to advertise Plnoldrick and maybe they could have picked a better locations too.  I also figured that they would of had better online store by now too.  Well I guess we will be saying goodbye to them too here soon.

I agree with poor marketing.   When Cabela's opened  I basically saw on the shelf what I saw in the catalog. Likewise if you go to a Bass Pro shop.    I thought that Sportsman Warehouse was the store for the catalog of the same name.  The one that sells a lot of Army surplus and off brand merchandise.   I stopped in the store to pick up a pair of cheap boots for work  and was shocked at the large fishing section.   Good selection and pricing.
I live 20 minutes from the store and have hardly seen any advertising on it.   The store's merchandise does not represent  my association with the name.

I was there Saturday and the selection was a lot better than Dicks and it was a heck of a lot closer than Cabelas.  Crowded too, for a Saturday afternoon when you'd think people would be trout fishing.  Not real sure why the store's being bashed but the prices, on what I bought, were less than Bass Pro (I get to Harrisburgh on occasion).  For what it is and the square footage I found it good.

It's ALL marketing ( too bad for us ). The profit margin on apparel, is much higher than on most fishing tackle. Plus apparel reaches a wider demographic. Boots, is boots wether you're fishing, hunting, or just stomping around the outdoors. Folks who have never been in the woods, or on a stream still wear cammo (why ?), rain gear, thermals, and such. A shop like PR's can focus on tackle, because that demo is large, and concentrated in his area. In a semi urban area though,it would be hard to survive on without a focus on apparel. Most (if not all) of these stores are located on very high rent properties, requiring high profit sales.

I read a phamplet I got from there once, there's a ton of SW's in the west, I think this one could have basically been a test location for the company.

yeah its no doubt better then dicks or gander mountain. BUT they keep shrinking thier selection. i havent seen any of the new model reels or rods in there and it's april? they did away with thier big fish isle and a bunch of other stuff. wuit selling bulk packs of certain stuff i always got.

sure it maybe better then others but for how long? pretty soon it will be widdled away to the fishing section of a kmart.

I work in the fishing department at sportsman's warehouse.  By the way we still have crystal method material.  The reason we got rid of some stuff was because it did not sell. Basically we are making room for the new product that we have been getting in and have no room for it.  The pittsburgh Sportsmans warehouse before this reset had double the amount of product that any other sportsman's warehouse fishing department had nationwide.  That is why we got rid of some of the stuff.  We had so much stuff sitting in the backroom that never hit the floor it was unreal.

Yes it is all about marketing! From a discussion that I had with a store associate in clothing, there is a real good mark up in clothing! Could that be why they are expanding the clothing department? Because the store is based out West, A lot of what they have in the fishing department is catering to that fishing out there. Some minor changes have been made to change to a more Eastern store but not a whole lot! Just like Obama, it is not good to tick off the hunting and fishing community in the state of PA!
