The PA Fish Commission came through and harvested there limit of steelhead and then some. They shocked the water and netted steelhead for scientific purposes. All in all about 50 to 60 of them.

They are conducting a study to find out where the steelhead in the PA tribs are coming from. Be that PA stocking, Ohio, and NY. They are going to take the ear stone out of their heads , pulverize it into a powder and do tests on it to find out which fish that were caught in this particular crick are from. They can tell from the tests ,if the fish harvested were from Either of the 3 states mentioned above. A migration study sort of say. He mentioned that they could have also come from Michigan areas as well.

They were also concerned with lamprey marks as well. Since lamprey also will enter the tribs to spawn and lay eggs. They are working to control the population of lampreys. They will treat the water and kill off as many lamprey eggs and or lamprey themselves. Did not remember when they do this but I think I heard it was during late spring and early summer. The treatment they use to kill the lamprey will not affect the other species of aquatic wildlife the tribs support.

I talked to the fish commission people and they were surprised to find as many smolts as they did today. The one gentleman I talked to said he had never seen so many natural repro'd smolt in the tribs. And by so many I mean about half a dozen or so in the areas they did the shocking. Since they dont stock smolts till spring time he said there is no other explanation for them being there. With the cool summer and lots of rain we had it provided a good habitat for them to strive in and thus natural reproduction had made its mark. Now its not nearly enough to have the fish commission stop stocking smolts in the future but he was glad to see it happening.

Now that that area has no more fish to be caught , the next rains that come will bring in more. The 50 - 60 fish they kept isnt even a dent in the numbers that have yet to come.

Lastly The PA Fish Commission is doing this study on many tribs. This one was done in 16 mile, the only east side trib they are doing. Also mentioned was Conneaut , elk , walnut ,and the cat.

Took a few pics for yinz to see, check em out. Hope you enjoy.

I learned a couple things talking to the Fish Commish and their studies they are conducting. Interesting to say the least.

Beginning the shocking.

Netting them as they surface.

One more for the cooler.

coming back to life after the shock.

Dont be alarmed ,  They are going to be killed to have the tests done so let the beatings begin. WHACK !!!

Into the coolers they go and off for studying.

My job here is done. Off to another trib for more collecting.

I love it.
Cant wait to read the summary report on this.

Thanks for the pics and story. I knew I have been seeing more natural spawned steelhead.
Always wondered why I catch so mant fin-clipped fish. Another state? never knew for sure.

Good post, Deetz.

Were there dudes coming down to that hole and "fishing for" the steel as they floated up from being shocked?

Guys were fishing the hole and they said sorry people but fishing may get tough in here. We are taking fish for studying and we might not leave any for you.

Some were ****ed and some guys just stood and watched like I did. I thought it would be cool to see and didnt care cause there is going to be a lot more where they came from.

Steelfillet, Ohio nor Pa clip fins.
I believe it was Spoonie that mentioned Pa intends to start

Donno about NY fin clips
I'm pretty sure  Michigan does as well as Ontario

here's a pic of steelie I caught years ago on upper Elk

the right front fin is missing....donno where it came from.
Someone posted a chart of what states clip what fins some years ago too.
Maybe someone more google savvy than me could find that info and re-post it again

Anadromous , I thought so as well but didnt wanna speculate that there was that good of a hatch. and survival rate.

Flyfishingdave and I speculated that there was exceptional class that made it. We realize it will not revolutionize trib fishing...but it's a nice thing to know that a few make it.

Deetzy - great post and very interesting. Can't wait to see the results of this study and thanks for the information. As far as the natural reproduction - deetz - remember that one smolt you caught the other weekend when we were on the stream. Looked like a natural repro to me. Thanks again buddy!

Great post - I will be very interested in seeing the results of this, and about the natural repro. I have been a firm believer for years, that there is way more successful spawning going on than what is believed. Trout are amazing creatures, and folks grossly underestimate their ability to survive. Everyone says the water temp is too high in the tribs in summer, well those little guys know where to go to alleviate that problem.

As has been mentioned in previous posts, their IS places with a decent amount of reproduction in Erie, the thing is, the MASSES will never see/find these places. I think it was spoonchucker that said you aren't going to get out of the truck and fall on them.

Even in some of the more well known tribs, there is places that support reproduction. Just like the salmon, they haven't been stocked for years, and they are still around. Probably will be in the creeks still when all of us are dead and gone.

To stay on the shocking subject....the PFBC shocked a very small stream by my parents house about ten to twelve years ago or so to see if the brookies were reproducing. They were but to everyones suprise was the amount of Browns that have been reproducing. The brownies were everywhere and some over 18 inches. Not alot of brooks but there were a few.
I wonder how much shocking goes on across the state on trout streams. I would like to be there when they do it. It came be very supriseing to see what comes out of certain streams.

Cool story, those small stream browns are awesome. That is what I am saying, it is amazing what is in many streams across the state, many UNSTOCKED streams have great trout populations, and several Erie tribs do have viable reproduction.

Thanks Deetz,
I was wondering when PA was going to start the survey. NY completed their contribution this past October.

This otoliths (earstones) study is being conducted by researchers at Bowling Green University. Funded by the Ohio Sea Grant.
They are supposedly taking 50 steelhead out of every trib that empties into Lake Erie. Each trib will be sampled both Spring and Fall.
The initial study was to determine hatchery environment effects to steelhead in relation to earstone makeup.
http://www.bgsu.edu/setgo/websiteposters/HAllamonPosterSSR09.pdf

That led to this one.

Here are some pics from Chautauqua Creek this past October.

As alluded to above, one thing to keep in mind in terms of juvenile steelhead production occurring this past spring/summer, is that we had a very wet summer which helped increase the carrying capacity of streams.  Even in NY, the mediocre streams that usually turn out only a handful of juvenile steelhead per year, were loaded this summer.  Simply put, the wet, cool summer made poor steelhead streams decent for at least one year.  If we get a normal to dry summer next year, all these mediocre streams will go back to being, well mediocre.

That's probably a 3CU fish. The saying at donation time was "Buy a Button, Clip a Fin." Or something like that.
