Since channel catfish is one of my favorite fish to eat, my wife, son ,and I usually fish Shenango dam a couple times every summer to catch a few for the pan.  This year the easy catfish bite has eluded me.  Only caught a couple of bullhead.

My usual areas are near the river channel at the Mahaney arm or the golden run area.  Nightcrawlers and chicken livers have always worked in the past.

I was hoping some of the regular Shenango fisherman could comment on the catfish bite this year.

Thanks,
Jerry

Jerry, we dont target them, but almost always get some nice ones sitting just out of the traffic pattern beore the bridge that starts the no wake zone leading to the dam (dont know the proper names for anywhere !) Have got them on shiners and quite a few on tubes, even a big blue a couple years ago.(at least thats what I think it was !) Mikastorm or Chauncy may have more or better info !

Get some fatheads and step on them then put them on your hook.
Work the channel along the east side of 18.
Under the bridges and the first bay north of the tracks
You,ll catch some decent ones.

Gizmos, chances are that wasn't a blue catfish, don't think there are any in PA. Not supposed to be anyway. It was probably a spawning male Channel. Did you catch it in May by chance?

Thanks for the tips Gizmos and Mikastorm.  I have read cutbait, shiners, etc are good channel cat baits but have never needed to try them.  Next trip I will definitely try them.

Gizmos, the area you suggested near the dam is the Mahaney arm I referred to.  It has always been productive in the past.  Sunday I tried just out of the traffic like you suggested and then tried the no-wake side of the bridge for calmer seas.

Mikastorm, When you said "first bay north of the tracks" which tracks are you referring to?

Thanks,
Jerry

Jerry, its the bay that ends in the prop. area. Alot of snags but those cats like to lay along the channel there.

I was told that they stocked blues in Shenango.

There is also NO SHORTAGE of channels (up to 10#) in Pymy.  Have always caught bunches during summer chasing 'eyes on the north end.

Crawlers on a bare hook on the bottom and you can fill a cooler of good fiddlers in a hurry if you get on 'em.

I don't know about other waterways, but the Ohio definitely has at least a few blues in it around the 'Burgh.

I've heard of Blues stocked in the Yough River.    I don't remember if it was the State or a club stocking.

I use a Erie Derie, cut the lure off right after the spinning blade and re tie the hooks so it's a shorter lure.   Then just use crawlers and troll and that really seems to work

Right now the carp are rampent. The small shad are gathered at the dam and the carp are hitting spinner baits! No cats yet but the guys that are targeting them are catching them on dead bluegill smashed. They are going out at 10 and ending at 2-3. Again it is in the channels.

Had some better luck today on the channels, thanks to Mikastorm.  Caught three fish, one was an unusual light color (see below).  Other posters debated whether blues existed at Shenango.
After some online research I learned the channel cat has 24-29 fin bones in the anal fin while a blue has 30-34.  This fish had 26.  But I also read that channels and blues will hybridize naturally.

Two fish were caught on large fatheads, the other on chicken livers.  Caught them in the river channel on the east side of 18.

I thought this one was a blue out of the Yough, too, just from the size, but the  number of rays on the anal fin said it was a channel.

Jetboater, took me awhile to figure it out also.  Using the "Add Image" icon would not work for me.

I had to paste the link from photo bucket into the text,

change IMG to img

then click the box "Embed picture in post".
