While fishing the two most popular streams in my area yesterday I noticed something,,something was missing all day and now I put my finger on it. Any decent sized trout,,,oh yeah thats it. What a disgrace! Catching 9-10 inch brookies at clear shade and 10 inch rainbows and pint sized browns at bens creek. Not to mention they jerked around the stocking in Bens creek so now browns rainbows and brookies all get put in different areas. Who are they trying to fool. If those jackass's are gonna stock so few fish at least give people something half-way decent to eat(although I don't), these things are a joke, and so is the trout program in this state.

Ok,,,I'm ready to hear about everyone's great defense of the PFBC and all the great trout that were caught everywhere else.

No defending the PFBC from me.  I've said for years that trout fishing in this state is a joke which is why I fish MD mostly.  The biggest trout I've caught in PA aren't even close to the normal trout I get in MD.  I'm sure people will post about all the big fish they caught and they are out there but not like they should be.  I thought lowering the limit would help but I haven't noticed any improvement. I'm with you catman. Something needs to be done.

Maybe you should look here as to how many fish are stocked.  http://www.fish.state.pa.us/stock.htm
Seem to me like that is alot of fish being stocked in the state.

If you didn't do well, don't feel like you missed out on something.  There seemed to be alot less fish everywhere and the worst thing about it is that there seemed to be alot more fisherman.  It looked like some kind of revival of trout fishing as I hadn't seem this many guys in years.  I'm sure there were a few creeks, streams, that got a few extra fish from the state and not counting the one's that get some attention from sportman club's stocking, but it looked to me that if didn't catch between 8:00-8:30am, you weren't going to catch at all.  I talked to alot of disappointed fisherman yesterday.  Who cares about the number they proclaim to stock, the fact is everywhere I know gets stocked alot less than years past.  A few creeks this year will be done with there in-season stocking by noon tomorrow, some by wednesday.

4.6 million means nothing,,,does that include what they give to clubs and donnations?
one example,,,keystone lk,,westmorland county,,70's and 80's,,1000 trout every week of the season,,and 12,000 first day. Now less than 4000 first day,,that was the number when they last posted it a few years ago. And now I think twice in season, I dought they put more than a thousand in season each time.

Yeah, the day they were going to stock a creek in-season used to be a big secret.  But when they got desperate over the lack of fishing liscenses sold, they started announcing the exact dates, but quit posting the amount of fish stocked.

if what you say is true, i guess its a sign of the times. could be wrong but last time i went opening day of trout(approx. 15 years ago), with the exception of seeing some large palaminos cruising around, i dont remember the fish being over 10 inches. i also remember catching nothing but rainbows. i also remember paying $.85/gallon for gas. adjust, or find something else to do, i guess.

Catman, come over to shenango river. Lots of big rainbow here. They have a winter stocking that gets very little pressure and the holdovers get big. Last spring i was catching 16 and a couple 18 inch bows. Ask Ronnie84 about them.

Catman:
Let me retort to you saying that they don't stock as much anymore and also to they don't put it in the paper any longer.

First to the newspaper when the PFBC put the stocking in the newspaper it cost money to do so and with the invention of the internet they can now save that cost they use to incure for putting it in the newspaper.

Second as a member of a club they do not and have never to my knowedge givin any trout or other fish to the club we raise money and stock our own fish in our lake and where the stream passes through our property.  As a matter a fact the one club I belong to pays for and stock trout in a public lake here in Westmoreland county and if I remember correctly the money that people pay for the I Helped Stock the Yough buttons goes to a club that puts trout in the Yough river.  Can not be helped if a few state stocked fish swim in our part of the stream.

Third they only stock where the waters are open to the public.  So if you are fishing at a stream the is next to private land the fish do migrate so they could be there, not the PFBC fault.

Fourth take a look at this next link and it will show you that they do put a ton of fish in the lakes, rivers, and streams in this state and not just trout.  One must remember that there are more than just trout fisherman in this state.  I  am one that believes that if the trout fisherman want more and larger trout then the PFBC should raise the price of the trout stamp to aid in getting more trout stocked.  Not the total cost of the fishing licenses for those that don't fish for trout.
http://www.fish.state.pa.us/stockwarmc_prior.htm

Lastly I fish into the late summer and early winter months when all the first month trout fisherman have gone for one reason or another and I catch nice size trout (10 to 20 inch range) on the lakes and streams that I fish.

In closing just be glad that we have the great fishery here in our state that we do, because some place are not a lucky as we are.  Hope you have a great season and alway keep your line wet.

I may be wrong on this, but I think that brown trout will eat brookies. If that is the case, then it wouldn't make much sense to stock them both in the same area. Also, one of the reasons that they post dates and meeting locations is to get help with stocking. From what I understand when you help with stocking, you find out where they put the really big ones, because you are the one putting them in.

As for the disappointment, thats just a shame. I'm glad that I'm still at the stage where catching a couple of nice fish is still a good time, and an occasional whopper is realy remarkable.

If it's strickly the size of the fish you want so you can have more to eat than you should quit fishing sell your rods, reel, and other fishing stuff(save on gas) and use the money to buy your fish at the local grocery store. You would be ahead money with less trouble and agrivation. I caught several fish yerterday between 8 - 13 inches, released them all and had a great day. Maybe tomorrow I'll keep two or three for the pan and I actually like the smaller ones. I saw a bunch of fish roped at Jacobs Creek and a few that went 14 inch. Four and a half or five million fish spread out over the state during miltiple stockings does not amount to very many fish per individual stream. To me, doesn't seem to be such a big deal.

Just me nickles worth(two cents doesn't go far these days).

It is unfair to compare the PA stocking program with those of Maryland and West Virginia.  I actually checked into this last night.  Maryland and West Virginia only stock a handfull of streams, compared to PA.  Also Maryland does much of their stockings with very small trout.  Could me the waterways are just managed better.

I have no major complaints.  I caught plenty of trout between 9 and 15 inches.  Not every one can be a trophy.

I take back about what I said about Maryland stocking small trout.  I was thinks of another state.  However, I could not find the size of trout stocked by Maryland.

Here is a link to all the stocking done by Maryland this spring:

http://www.dnr.state.md.us/fisheries/stocking/springtroutstock.html

Compare that list to PA's.

We fished a part of Laurel Hill yesterday that we have gone to since I was a child.  My brother and I took the kids, that's the only reason we went.

In past years, we saw probably close to 100 fish caught in the stretch we fish on....up and down in our view.  We saw MAYBE 20 caught yesterday.  We wound up with 3 for the kids.  I'm very disappointed.  How are we supposed to keep kids interested if there are no fish??

Sorry about the kids not catching many.  Take them out in May.  There will be plenty in Laurel Hill Creek.

I fished Laurel Hill as well yesterday.  I caught over twenty, not a bad day, not a great day.  Seriously did you happen to notice the fishing pressure there yesterday?  That was the worst I had ever seen it.  Sure I would have caught a lot more if it were not for the crowds.  Many taking everything the caught (I have nothing agianst anybody keeping fish as long as they are consumed, and not thrown away.  I myself have not kept a trout in years).

Isn't trout fishing supposed to be a sport?  Not a shooting gallery.  If you caught 100 trout everytime you went out...where's the challange?  I'm reading this board in different areas, and people are acting like it is they are entitled to a 20 inch rainbow every other cast.  Sorry I just had to vent.  Athough, far from perfect, I think our state does a pretty fair job in stocking.

Take the kids out in May.  The results will be a lot better.

There are plenty of fish and some good sized fish too. Perhaps the state should hire a staff to hangout under water and put fish on the hooks. Only fish over 18" of course.

Know what makes me really appreciate catching fish? The days when I don't. Same goes for the kids.

As I read more posts, it looks like some people can't accept the fact they had a bad day.  Blame the state on their bad day.  Do they praise the state when they have a great day?

Price of gas went up, I bitched but kept driving just like everybody else.  The price of flour is going up but I'm still going to eat pizza.  I think I'll keep fishing.

Even with the invention of this thing called the internet they still do put stockings in the paper....I believe he was referring to numbers of fish.  I know of clubs that are give and take.  There was no private property anywhere I know of on the creeks I fished and it sucked.  And lastly, all the numbers of non trout fish that are stocked are fine and dandy, but keeping the waters they stock them in have to be in good shape and they should realize their natural habitat is what these fish want and need.  Trying to drain these lakes down and installing their own idea of habitat/spawning areas have been devastating.  Why are they stocking all these non trout fish?  To make up for mistakes?  Natural spawning will by far and away exceed any stocking the state can do.  When I think about it, they should stick to trying to improve the trout program and leave anything else alone.

An underwater staff wouldn't work, the deputy wardens would find a way to abuse it like they do with the little 'power' they have.  Now the weather control equipment sounds great, can I give you exact dates?
