I have been thinking about trying a shock leader. Have you ever used one??? Does it effect casting, roll cast, tuck cast etc. I like to fish smaller tippets but these fresh steelies are tuff on the tippet. Any comments would be appreciated.

A guy fishin next to me on Elk last year was using one. He said he liked it. He was losing a lot of fish and it worked for him.

I have fished them & I like them but you have to learn to set the hook harder because of the stretch in the shock piece, had no problem with casting & it worked great on those sudden hard runs.

I use to use shock gum until the poly leaders entered the market and I strongly recomend it...I've used them for years and love them.

Characteristics are a mono core with a poly outer shell giving the angler a leader that has just the right amount of stretch for lighter tippets, loop to loop conections on each end, nice roll over.

Available in floating to various sink rates, of course the fast sinking (black) lead core option does not have the stretch the others do.

I carry hover intermediate and fast sinking in my pack all 5' legnths and add 2' - 4' legnths of tippet depending on the situation.

I've had them last 2 seasons or more.

Available in seven densities in 5',10' and 14’ lengths to provide complete depth control, so often essential for salmon/steelhead fishing. Floating leaders work well when fishing Bombers, Slow and Fast sink leaders are perfect for avoiding drag with a floating line and the Extra Super Fast sinking leader gets the fly deep quickly.

Max. tippet 24lb–40lb available in 5’ ,10’ and 14’ lengths.

I think if you are using the correct size rod weight to the fly and fish and it is a quality blank you won't need a shock tippet. Also try using a higher quality tippet like Wulff. Can't beat it. If you have a cortland ct or simialr broom of a stick then a shock tippet is a very acceptable way to manage the lack of flex in the first half of the rod. You can use a $1.00 trout snubber from the sporting goods store to even see if you like the feel before you commit to the shock.

I use a winston Ltx 7wt with frog hair 6x tippet, I usually don't have a problem but with crowded conditions I try to land them quick. The smaller tippet I believe helps me in the clear conditions thought the shock leader would allow me to continue using the smaller tippet

RIO makes Shock Gum. Comes in 15 lb and 9 lb. Tie it between the leader and tippet.

Follow up: I added the shock gum today. I let the fly shop do it as it was not easy. They tied it directly to the end of the fly line and then on to the leader using something akin to a bimini knot. I've heard good things about this system.
