Heading to NY and was planning on experimenting with a 12lb tippet. The diameter is .009 which is small for the test. I just wondered if anyone else has used this test of leader and if so how did it perform. I typically use Grand max 9.2 after advice from some board members but the thought of such a powerful tippet is intriguing as long as it does not affect the hook up ratio and bait presntation. Any input out there?

Too stiff in my opinion!
Stick with the GrandMax 3x.

I have done well with the 12lb flouroflex (2x)
I fished it during slow and low Erie last month, bass, and west coast salmon/steelhead
I was using it for nymph droppers too
I like it... but i like Rio

TB,
Instead of  investing in Cabelas, you need to buy a good Cross pen, and a steno pad. Observe and record. The big browns still elude you because your eyes are yet blind to the ways. Come along grasshopper and be enlightened. Not all fish are so easily duped by your mail order ways....you must earn the respect of the Gods or be damned to your mediocrity...Now go, before the  sound of my drag befalls your neophyte ears and my   blood, freshly pricked by thy great browns tooth, stains your brand new Chotas. Stand down whilst I wield my rod and learn humility...I will defend thy salmon kings redd whilst the German thief lies in wait for his fanned buffet to ride unwaringly on the currents and in the midst of morsels that have long lost their stronghold on the great rivers floor, my placebo of earths fur and fowl will wait....patiently until I strike out with great vengence and cry of battles at hand and long ago fought....You TB, are not worthy yet of such Knightly duels and the battle of kings. Stand down, your sword is yet heavy and the blade not hardened for such a task. For now continue to frollick in the flowered meadows with your pubecent nymphs and listen for the castle guards to blow their trumpets at dusk, ensuring that you remain safe at your mothers teet.
:)

I have used both the ff and GMax with good results on Ontario.  They are all you will find in my vest these days.

G Max(9.2) use it almost exclusively now for steel with good results, especially when you're combat fishing.

I believe Glen put me onto that last year and I have used it since with good results. Supple enough, thin enough, strong enough. I have gotten away with using 6lb vanish in the past but I figure if its the same thickness why not up odds.

Orvis Mirage or G Max. Both are the same IMO, they even knot well together. Had a client who insisted in using his Fluoroflex on the SR last week and it ended up with a lot of break offs. I would disagree that it's stiffer than G Max though, but I'm an a-hole so it's almost mandatory that I argue. That's my $.02.

I fished rio for a long time and came to the conclusion its pure junk. it breaks easy, doesnt take heat at all and just plain sucks.

man, glad I'm not the only one
Thought there was sump-um wrong with me...

I tried Rio once.
Don't recall what wt, probably 3X
I was disappointed.
I'll admit I'm not the best knot tier in the world,  but i couldn't keep a good knot to save my bacon.
I had similar woes with Orvis Mirage

The only fluoro I have any measure of success with is Seagar's
G-max and carbonpro have both worked well for me
I've given up on all the rest

One of the things some people miss with high strength, low diameter line is abradability.  Some of the stuff wears like mad when it contacts stones.  I believe it's because of the stiffness of the line.  I've seen Rio actually appear to chip and any wear on a small diameter line greatly reduces it's effectiveness.  I'll stick to 6# vanish for Erie, and 10# vanish for NY.  It works, and it's cheap enough to change it often if it wears.  Jusy my 2 cents.  But then again; I'm cheap.

I have used it up NY this year and had no problem with it at all. My only problem was my net man, lol. It held up alot better than the Orvis Mirage that my buddy was using. The Mirage was junk and kept fraying and breaking rather often and horrible knot strength.

TB, Don't worry about anadromous, I can show you everything your need about fishing for browns in Oak Orchird. I was doing it while he was in Diapers.
