Hey fellers.  Thinking of having a replica mount done.  Got one 31.5in over the weekend with almost 19" of girth.  The biggest fish Ive got on my boat.  Weighed in bled at walbut 10.62lbs...Probaly a little closer to 11lbs when caught...Thinking either of waiting on another for a skin mount, but I want the fish with the citation paper on my wall....

Wondering about doing a replica mount of it...Made the mistake of cutting the throat without doing much thinking...Im still very disappointed in myself....the next thing i regret is filleting it.

Know anyone locally who does replica mounts for lake erie walleyes...every other one i keep seeing looks too brown like they were caught in some muddy river somewhere.

Nope wasnt that anything overcame me but just thinking it was another 9lb walleye.  I didnt really look at it as closely as i would have liked too...just brought it in Cut it, threw it on a stringer bled it out, then rode it around in the cooler all day...Was the 1st fish we got saturday morning and had nothing onboard to compare it too.  Even if i would have clipped the gill i could have just turned it the other way but no, I had to go and cut its head off...lol.  This fish was very clean too not a mark or a defect on it.  Even caught it on a watermelon willow leaf (that i live and die by)...it was the perfect fish to mount...Having a replica done and not being happy with it would be a slap in the face every time I look at it...

Ive caught alot of fish 30"+ just never tipped the scales over 9lb 13oz.  Had one 32.5" that was 9.5lbs...This fish I just underestimated and cut it before i even thought about it or looked it over...now im just sick over it....I do have a citation coming though...and have lots of pictures...I guess I can wait on another and get a skin mount done...Very disappointed...lol...Now I need one over 11lbs...Lots of big ones being caught out there.  Friends of mine are reporting lots of 10+lb walleyes...I hope I see another so I can get over this one.

CB,

You may try Reichards Taxidermy in Mud Lick, near New Bethlehem, PA . They did a nice job on a Palamino my son caught that I, um accidentally gutted. I know that he also does replicas as long as you have measurements and a pic or two he should be able to do the job. I'll see if I can find his business card for you.

CB,

Tried to PM you but your box is full.

The contact phone for Reichard's Taxidermy is 814-256-3895.

He had a monster 38" Walleye that he was doing the last time I was over, beautiful mount, it had a freeze dried perch almost in it's mouth, all fins extended, awesome looking fish.

Good luck

CB, i feel your pain. I got an 18 1/4", 3.2lb crappie last season. The more crappies i catch, the more i think i should have put that fish on the wall.

It was caught in the creek South of New Bethlehem. They catch some monsters in there, really close to home for me, but for some reason I enjoy Erie much more. May have to change my mind with the fuel prices though. I just don't like that type of fishing much any more.

The mount on that fish was fantastic, it looked mean enough to make you not want to go swimming. I'll see if I can get a pic of it to post.

I stand corrected , it was a little over 32", caught in Redbank Creek in '06. I should have a pic to post tomorrow of the finished mount. Sorry, I've never exagerated the size of anything before, honest. Well, at least not on purpose, maybe, um.

The best thing to do would be to stop in at several taxidermists and ask to see some replicas that they have done before.  I have 2 channel cat replicas.  One is CRAP, the other is amazing.   The difference:  I shopped around in person to find the guy that did the second one.  The worst part is that I actually gave  the fish to the guy on the crappy one.  He had the freakin fish right in front of him and he still did a horrible job.  I have never seen a blue channel cat.  In fact I've never even seen a blue cat that blue.  Have you ever seen a light blue catfish at all!  Of crap I'm ranting...

On the good mount, the fish was released and all I had was a picture and measurements.  That guy studied the picture closely and got the color just right and placed every spot and speck in the exact spot.  If my camera was here I'd go take pics of the mounts and post it with the original fish pics to show you how good (or bad) it can get.

If you still have the filited skin or took a picture then you can get a good replica if you find the right guy. Ask around too...the best taxidermists usually are not at the big shops. Good luck with it.

I had a walleye skin mount  at links and I personally love his color of the way he paints walleye. Repilicas are very expensives $300+++ just for the form normally then w/e the taxidermist wants to charge you to paint it. The best replica I ever seen was one Tri-State Taxidermy did of a brown trout was unreal.. Hes expensive $35 an inch, but his work was highest quality. I took my King Salmon to Fishermens Pride in Titusville and I was very impressed with his work especially for the price $11 an inch. He had a very nice display of many different species and he does them super quick told me two months on my King not 1 year like many others. For the price difference in Tri State and  Fishermens Pride I couldnt say the price difference was justified, just my opinion. Capt.Paul does super work tho cant deny that

I'm with captain hook, even the best replicas aren't as good.
