Just wondering what the water clarity is like with recent rainfall, would imagine everything from the Entriken causeway uplake is pretty mucked up but was wondering what its like around Aitch, hate to make a run down and not be decent with gas prices what they are. thanks

Bronze -

This may be of no use to you...  I did drive over the Juniata River yesterday (turnpike), and didn't look bad.  If you don't have these book marked, here you go.  These should be able to give you some what of an idea of how high the lake is, and would imagine if search some other links to tribs, you could figure out if there is likelyhood of muddy water.

Good luck, and don't be shy to post some results.  Pictures of 20lb stripers or hog walleye always help the working day go by!

Pork,
Thanks for the info I'm a little closer to Raystown than Arthur where I usually chase wipers so this year (gas prices) think I'll be on Raystown chasing stripers more than on Arthur, hope the commission can come up with some wiper fingerlings for Arthur. Good luck with the new boat  I just became a member of the non-shorebound faternity and its kinda a whole new ballgame , also have been having fun chasing eyes and learning structure never had a fishfinder before find myself spending too much time exploring when I should probably be doing more fishing. Wife says I'm like a kid with a new video game, 34 months to retirement then I'm gonna fish till my arms fall off. Thanks again

I know the feeling of learning how to fish from a boat and learning a new fish finder... I too just got a new boat and fish finder. I was on Raystown on Fri and Sat from 7 Points to the Dam. The water was very clear near the dam but by the time you got up to 7 points and Bear Barrel Bay, it was getting pretty murky, I'd say 3 feet in clarity at best...

To all,
I’ll be heading over to Raystown the week of June 2 for a few days.  This will be my first trip to the lake.  I have a 16 foot Starcraft with a 15hp so I don’t plan on setting the lake on fire but would really like to see as much of the lake as possible.  Could anyone give me a few ideas of where I might be able to fish the lake.  We will be staying at the southern end of the lake.  Thanks in advance for your help and suggestions.

Thanks CJBS2003,
I don't really have the hardware for deep downrigger type fishing so I will be fishing in more shallow waters.  Don't really want to disturb the bass if they are on beds.  Any suggestions?

During the first week of June your best bet would be fishing for bass. You can fish for bass you just can't target their beds and you have to through all the bass you catch back. If your looking to catch something you can keep the crappie fishing is pretty good in the southern end and they can be found around most lay downs. Raystown is a awesome lake and if your putting in at the southern end I would launch at Aitch and fish the points just out from the boat launch. There's a lot of good areas in the James Creek area and should be good during the first week of June.
Have Fun and Good Luck

Even the Weaver's Fall launch can be a good place to launch out of. I have had good luck with bass there and you can often get a great mix of smallies and largemouths there especially in June. If you are lucky you might even get a walleye or two mixed in.

" hope the commission can come up with some wiper fingerlings for Arthur."

Watched them stock 18,000 a few weeks ago.

Bronzeback,
As the boat thing seems to get easier, I add somthing new to the equation to make it harder...

Check out this link, there may even be a closer place to your for wipers/stripers.  I really want to make it out to Raystown one of these days with the boat.  Just getting time to head out locally is a challenge, so making it there is almost impossible.

NHFish-

Try doing some internet searches on clip weights or bottom bouncers.  These would likely get you deep enough, without having downriggers.  I have no clue if you need to go deep at this time of year on Raystown though...  The clip weights are a pretty nice way to suspend baits.  Here is a little 10th grade math put to real world use...  Not sure how exact it is, but should get you close.  If you don't have a line counter, figure out how far 2' from your spool out is.  This is usually to the first eyelet or a little further.  Let out line by pulling it off of the reel, and counting.  So, every pull of line is letting out 2 feet.  Learned that from a fishing show.

Can't clip a xcel sheet in?  I'll try to figure out how to get it on here.

Pork,
Been chasing the eyes at Glendale with mixed results, been putting a few crappie in the pan just enough for a meal as I go, great news Spoonchucker on the wipers would really like to see the commission raise their own don't think it can be that hard to do if they can cross northerns and muskie to make tigers. And as far as this boat thing really changes perspective on how I fish, wife says I have that see me disease that next point always looks good.

The PFBC used to hatch it's own pure striped bass up until a few years ago. They have never hatched wipers. They now trade the VDGIF for their stripers. They give VA musky, nothern pike and tiger fingerlings in exchange for striped bass fingerlings. Wipers are pretty easy to raise, hatching them is more difficult. But it's not as hard as some species... The simple fact that wipers are now the 3rd most produced farm raised fish behind channel cats and rainbow trout should speak to the ease in raising them. They used to stock many of the lakes here in VA with wipers in the 80's but then the fisheries biologists got freaked out thinking they may go over the dam, some how swim to the Chesapeake Bay and spawn with wild striped bass screwing up the genetics. Many people don't realize it, but wipers are not sterile but can actually cross back when they spawn. That is why Raystown Lake is no longer stocked with wipers as it had been in the 80's. The Raystown Branch evetually dumps into the Bay. Plus combining wipers and stripers togethers causes problems. It is best to stick with one or the other.

cjbs2003,
I agree wipers in Raystown isn't a good idea, I was refering to like Arthur and other lakes and rivers in the Ohio river drainage, heard they were getting the wipers from Georgia and were having problems securing them, thought the answer would be to be self sufficient. They do produce an awesome fishery where there is a good forage base like alewives, but they are eating machines and I'm pretty sure they tolerate warmer water a little better than the purebreds.

Yes, I agree. They are excellent on the other end of the line and do very well in moderate to large lakes with a good forage base of open water baitfish such as alewife or shad. I have a friend in Kansas who has a 5 acre pond and he only stocks it with channel cats and wipers. He feeds them pellets and they grow huge. He consistantly catches wipers over 10 lbs. I think his biggest was 16 some pounds! I have also heard they will do a decent job of cleaning up stunted panfish in small ponds if stocked. But I do not have any first hand experience with that. Virginia has the same issue in securing a reliable source of wipers to stock as well. I think they are getting to the point where they will no longer be stocking them at all. Won't effect me as I don't live near any lakes that get stocked with them. I wonder how much more tolerant of warm water they are over stripers? Even small striped bass are very warm water tolerant. It isn't till they start getting into the double digit weights do stripers seem to start to get warm water shy...
