HI Everyone,

I am heading to Raystown this weekend (Fri-Tue) and wnat to get into some serious fishing.  I have a boat loaded with downriggers, planer masts, etc. and hope to get into some stripers and\or lake trout.  I am taking the family and hope to get my 12 yr old son up early enough to hit prime time.

I only get to Raystown once\twice a year, so any recommendations are appreciated.  Locations, gear, bait, etc.

If the big boys aren't biting I will move to crappie to get a nice fish dinner.  Anyone information on this is welcome as well.

Thanks!!

Tex,
You are really asking for a hard time on Raystown if you want to fish it on a weekend.  The best advice for a weekend is:  "If you see the sun come up and you ain't already on the lake then you're already too late!"  After the sun comes up and all the house boats, tour boats, water skiers, wakeboarders, bass fishermen, wannabe bass fishermen, and just plain rowdies hit the water most fishing goes straight to he-11 in my opinion.
But just for the sake of argument try to find 40-65 feet of water and troll for stripers using a BIG spoon or plug or a live 6" rainbow trout  off of points or river beds.  If you see a fish "boil" in shallower water head for it and throw out a rattletrap reeling from inside the boil out to the edges and be prepared for the strike when the lure leaves the mass of shad.  For small mouth and bass.  Try fishing the edges of the cliffs, look for overhanging banks and anchored trees. fish about 6-10 feet deep.  Try the opposite bank from the swimming areas and watch out for speedboats. You can also go WAAAYYYYY upstream and try some of the influx waters for trout and smallies.  I'd call ahead and ask the marinas or the fish comis.

Good luck!  The best days to FISH Raystown are tues-Wed-Thurs when the crowds aren't there

Thanks for the tip indsguiz.  Where can I buy trout?  Any recommended bait shops?  How about a place to watch the Pittsburgh Penguin game Sat night (if they make it that far?)

Tex,
There used to be a good one on the way in to the marina.  But I don't know if it's still open.  I'd still call ahead and ask questions.  I stopped really trying to fish Raystown about 6 years ago when I had some ski-dooers just about ram my small boat because they weren't paying attention and were hugging the shore and I just happened to be anchored over a school of pearch  (cliffs over standing, sunken timber, 25-30 ft of water, about 3 points down from the marina launch).  There ARE fish there, and nice ones at that but the best itmes are from 1 hour before dawn till 9-9:30 AM and then 5-9:30 at night.  There is some good night fishing along the sunken flats just where the deep water drops off  (the old river channel).   Good luck and let us know how you do.

BTW: the daily limit on personal watercraft is 4.    LOL!

Just got back.  What a hot, humid, sunny five days.. 90+ days.  I went on a charter with Striperguide.com, captained by John on Saturday morning.  We launched about 6 AM and after 3 hours, nothing....but then at 9AM POW!  I let my 12 year old son fight the 16lb, 33 inch striper to the boat.  Unfortuantely it was the only one caught, but the memories are worth it.  Captain John did a good job explaining what he was doing and why.  We were the only boat that caught one that day (hear say) and there was even a striper tournament going on.  it made a very tasty dinner (kids raved about it).

I tried my luck by myself on Sunday morning without and luck.  I did fish for some largemouth for about an hour, but the sun was just too hot.

Most of the days were spent, tubing, knee boarding and swimming with the family.  It was a successful trip all around.  I am hoping to get back out in October.

Tex,
Glad you caught something.  You were obviously in the minority.  As Paul Harvey says:  "And now you know the Rest of The Story!"

We didn't get into any of the lakers but a few reports over the radio confirmed a couple catches.  Suprisingly those catches were closer to the surface.  Go figure.

FishingMOZ did you have any luck?
