Cris, sorry to hear you didn't have a great time. Anyone who says they always catch Salmon, never got skunked, etcc... is BS-ing you. Most people I've known who have gone to the Salmon River for the first time (or many times) have had very high expectations and never had a hook-up. It's easy to get caught up in the photos and size of the fish. Reality can be very disappointing. It is a different type of fishing. You have to be in the right place at the right time with the aggressive, un-chucked and ducked fish. Fish that have been chased or had lead slung at them for a while are very difficult, if not impossible to catch. I wish I had a nickel for how many times I tried to pass a lure/bait to a fish and have it bolt up/down stream spooked because of it. But, when the moon is right, all the pieces come together, and you hook-up, you will remember it for the rest of your life. As far as snagging, lining, or lifting fish, it used to be legal years ago. Do people still do it? Yes they do. All shapes and sizes too. Bait, fly, lure, doesn't matter. The temptation is great. Doesn't make it right though... Spending money on fishing gear, well we all do. It's part of the process. You didn't state what you purchased. Was it for fly or bait fishing? In reality $200 is not a lot to get set up for Salmon fishing in the river. Rod, reel, line, waders, cleats, lead, hooks, glasses, bait/flies, X 2 people, it adds up real quick. As Tuna said, I would recommend a competent guide for first timers. You will learn quite a bit. It will save you time, frustration, and money in the long run. Don't be afraid to ask for references. If you get a guide that promises you the moon and the stars, ask him for the powerball numbers too while your at it. You'll probrably have a better time playing the lottery... You'll get a load of info. on these boards also. When you get time, read some of the previous posts. Best of luck in the future. OTH
