For the last two years we got them as soon as the ice came off in the north end bays, that has NOT been the case this year. In fact a couple honey holes were completely devoid of crappies. These spots are almost exclusively black crappie spots and I didn't catch many on the ice either. I hope we are not witnessing a down trend in the black crappie population, I much prefer cleaning them to the whites. May is prime time, but really with as quickly as the water is warming, right now should be awesome too! I don't like to keep crappies after the middle of May, the "mushy" really comes out in them.
