Hello all,

I’m heading up to Pymatuning with some friends to do some canoeing / fishing this weekend. We will be camping in the Jamestown campground.

Can anyone recommend a local bait shop (possibly some bait recommendations?), and possibly a boat rental place? I have one canoe, but there are to many of us for one boat and taking turns is annoying...

And if anyone wants to share a spot or two (a pm would be nice =D ) it would be much appreciated. I haven’t been up to the park since my parents used to take me as a kid.

Thanks!

Richter's Bait (just out of Jamestown on 322) and I think Jamestown Livery still rents boats.

Good luck on the fishing...

It has been an off year for virtually all species, well except for maybe carp and channel cats.

Garrick, Storm is right about Jamestown Livery. They do rent canoes and also sell bait. I'd say they have a pretty good shop.

Thanks guys, i will look them up.

I was hoping to catch a little somthing that i could fry up in camp for a snack, but if all we catch is carp and cats then most of the guys (and gals) im taking will be happy. They've never really caught anything thats put up a fight before. Any suggestions on bait for catching cats? As a kid i would use hot dogs for carp, and would catch them like mad up there.

Thank guys!

Hard to beat crawlers for the cats.  You might even pick up an incidental walleye, perch, 'gill, bass, or something.

the bay to the north of the jamestown livery may be a good place to start, or just offshore, beyond the weed beds of the livery.  richters is a real nice store.  talk to dave, he may be able to send you to the right spots.  also, russ williams at gateway bait on rt. 85 (ohio side of the causeway).  his phone number is 440.293.7227.

Any good baitshops near Linesville?  Where are the "stumps" at compared to the Linesville Campground?

I just read about the Linesville Spillway "Where the ducks walk on the fish" or whatever... can you fish there? Or is this just a tourist thing for people to feed the fish. The pictures of all those carp are insane.

You can fish at the Spillway, just on the opposite side of the road from where the ducks walk on the fishes backs.

Still plenty of carp on the other side.

you should just take a bow up there and get rid of some old arrows in the backs of some of them

then sell the fish to the chinese.....

From the Linesville Marina the stumps are to the left of Harris Island (the island right in front of the marina)  You will start seeing the tree limbs sticking out of the water, here and there, once you get to the end of the Harris all the way to Whaley Island.  I don't know of any bait shops in Linesville,  except for the marina there.  I get all my bait from the Espyville side where my camp is.

PT, If you take 285 into Espyville, Proffs on the left has a very good selection of baits and lures.  I'm up there this weekend, I'll ask around when I go to the club up there and let you know if I find anyplace closer to the campground.  Take care.

Thanks guys.  I still have a few weeks, but I'm already fishing in my mind!  I always seem to catch more there than on the water...  Just hoping to get into something.

W18, You are correct on Bills Country Market.  He calls it fresh keilbossi, but it is the best.  Had some excellent steaks from there too.  Have you ever been to the tackle shop in Andover?  The one on the right shortly after crossing the causeway?  I haven't been there yet but it looks like a decent size shop.

Gateway is good, it is on the right shortly after the beer depot if you are heading west.  Has a large selection.  If I am going to Pymy and fishing anywhere near the causeway I am going to Poff's in Espyville or Gateway in Andover.

The road right before the causeway is Lake Road.  Turn left and he is a few miles down the road on the left.

russ williams is the owner of gateway.  it is the oldest tackle shop on the lake, i believe.  excellent selection.  he used to guide on the lake years ago.  knows the lake real well.  may want to stop in and jawbone with him.

I made my trip up this weekend.  Not much time to explore though.  Found a bait shop about a mile away from the campground, that is open 24 hours (Gillette).  I really wanted to check out the Bill's Country Market, but 2 days didn't give me enough time to explore the lake, yet the area.  I will definitely make a longer trip next time there.

Fishing was slow, but not a total wash.  Got a nice 12.5" crappie and 13" spotted bass on crawler harnesses also a 5" perch fishing the shore.  Was easily able to find the stumps, and had a great drifting wind, but no takers in that area, besides the stumps themselves...  I think 1 day of focussing on crappie would have been a good idea.  Especially for my belly!

My dad has been talking about getting a camp somewhere for the past 10 years.  I think Pymatuning would be perfect.  Erie would be great too, but would imagine it is a bit more pricy.  Would anyone know of some good reality companies and such for camps in the area?

Thanks,
PT

PT,  Go to http://www.realtor.com/ and put in the zip code 16424 for Espyville / Linesville.  You will see a lot of stuff with a wide range of prices.  After you pick out a few then, call a realtor.  I can refer you to the realtor I used if you like, I thought he was good guy.  Just pm me for his name or any other info you might want to talk about.  I have my camp up there for about a year and we just love it.  In fact we will be up there for Labor Day.

for suggestions on stuff, I'd take a look at pike jigs. Personally, I don't go up there that often but have heard that the Pike are in there & jigs work.

Troll Hot N Tots but make sure you have a lure retriever on hand alot of snags around the stumps! Also light bottom bouncers with colorado blades work for the eyes! And you cant forget a green jig with a minnow as well as jigs with propellers. These all work for me but only in the spring. I have a friend that fishes there evey weekend he's not in Erie on my boat and he usually gets 4-6 eyes a trip.
