I wipe the infected area with laquer thinner or starting fliud to remove the plant oils from the skin. Then put on Benadryl gel.

One of the best things I've found is the juice of the "touch-me-not" plant (it's the one that has the little seed pods that burst when you touch them)! Almost instant relief!

I have been using a product made by Cortaid.  It has a scrub to remove the oil and a treatment spray.  Have used everything already mention on this post and this stuff seems to work the best for me.

Tee Tree oil helps a lot! I have had a lot of wonderful results to prevent poison ivy, etc with Natural Vitamin C. It has done wonders for me!
--(Lorals2@NOSPAMaol.com) submitted June/26/1999
Editor note: I have found a site that lists other natural products they claim help cure Poison Ivy

I noticed one of responses mentioned "tea tree oil." Another name for the "tea tree" is "melaleuca tree," and I have it on good report that melaleuca oil works wonders on poison oak rash, with almost instant itch relief, and close to overnight disappearance of the rash. There is a company by that name, that distributes the oil, along with other products, and a representative can be found in most local phone books.
--Victor Rutherford (rutherforv@NOSPAMaol.com) submitted Nov/4/1999

I have it right now on my legs, and a little on arms and face. My mom suggested tea tree oil to help relieve the itching and lo and behold it works. On the label of the product we have (I don't have the bottle right here in front of me) it says to the effect of, "relieves itching caused by mosquitos, scratches, ..." but it doesn't list poison oak on there. It really seems to work though so try it and if anyone else finds it useful let me know.
--Joel (joel_the_man@NOSPAMhotmail.com) submitted Jun/9/2000

I have poison ivy for the first time and I hope it is the last. I tried the hydro-cortisone cream and calamine, nothing was working. I found your web-site and tried the Tea Tree Oil. I started putting it on yesterday afternoon. It helped a little at first, I just kept putting it on every 2 hours. This morning, I feel like a whole new person. The itch has gone down to almost nothing. I will keept putting it on all day. It doesn't smell that great, but just keep putting it on, it really works.
-- Rebecca Caporusso (bassalec02@NOSPAMatt.net) submitted 8/May/2001

I experienced three bouts with poison ivy after moving to a wooded area. Each case was worse than the one before. My doctor put me on a steriod, which helped a little, but it didn't dry up the rash. As soon as I went off of the steroid, the rash came back with a vengeance. I had the rash all over my arms, legs, stomach and neck. I tried every over-the-counter remedy I could get my hands on and nothing kicked it. I finally tried Tea Tree oil that a friend had given me and it was amazing! I diluted it with just a little bit of water and put it directly on the rash with a cotton ball. The relief was instant!!! The swelling went down overnight and the rash was gone within days. I haven't had any problems since. Tea Tree oil is a sure cure and is available where health food and aromatherapy oils are sold.

Jewel weed works well.  There is only one problem with it, you have to go look for it (most of the time in the woods) and risk getting more poison ivy than you started with LOL...  That said, bleach is more readily available.  Many of the farmers I knew growing up used bleach on PI or PO, and I have used it on poison oak.  Within a couple of days, all itching has completely disappeared.

In no way am I suggesting or prescribing that you should use bleach.  It can be very bad for your liver and I do not want to be held liable for any damages you may somehow contract from placing bleach directly on your skin.  I am saying that it has worked for me and some people I know...

agreed this stuff works the best and the fastest by far. When i barely touch the stuff im infected head to toe. Even inside my mouth and my eyes. And ive found cortaid has worked dam near as close to the steroid shot my doctor gives me.

I highly recommend this.  I get a shot every time I get poison ivy.  I get the rash just by looking at the plant.

Common mistake, but there is no such plant a poison oak in pennsylvania.  There is one found in the western states, namley colorado, but none here.

Agree with Zanfel.  Works wonders.  Rub it it in till the itch starts to burn a little, then rinse it off.  Itch be gone.

Gobyking, did you scrub the bleach into and around the infected area? That's why I use laquer thinner to really clean the area of the oil real good. I take it that the cream you got was not over the counter. Does cortisone sound familiar?

I use to get it real bad when I would cut the borders of the fields and trails on my dad's farm. Before we learned about thinner, we would wash down IMMEDIATELY the areas exposed with white vinegar and dish detergent. It would help stop it from being as bad. A lot of times we never got any rash.

Not any help, but may make it seem not so bad.

A daughter of a friend is a distance runner and while running in a race, got the squirts which I guess is common for distance runners. She dropped off the course in the woods, dropped her shorts and emptied her bowels, and then, you guessed it, chose the wrong leaf to wipe with. Humorus story but she was in bad shape for a while. Maybe your arm doesn't bother you as much now?
