Time to start my annual peters creek post, 1st trip of the year this past saturday (believe it or not). Could not talk my brother in law into going upstream to piney fork, he had excuse after excuse (nothing new) so we end up fishing the gill hall road stretch, creek was nice, depth was perfect, color was just right, but OMG THE MOSS!!! the creek is infested with it!!! slow deep holes were just about totally unfishable, as quick as you get your line out there n set up, here comes a 5lb clump of moss downstream clamping onto your line, it was everywhere. Even tried fishing a cpl of the fast runs that open to pools, could'nt even make out the run, as the rocks were completely covered in moss. I did manage to get lucky (if you will, lol) and caught a small brownie, about 10 inches. My brother in law said he caught of all things, a decent largemouth, he said he was about 12 or so plus had something else hooked that stayed deep on him & ended up getting off, my guess is either a sheephead or a carp as i saw quite a few of then in there, but man i hope a good bit of that moss ends up breaking free & drift downstream, preferably right into the mon!!!

Lots of moss. Hope fully with some rain it will get blown out.  Also the upper section of Piney was all disclored Sat.  It was in the afternoon.  Not sure if it rained upstream or not.  Did not fish it.  Went down below and had not luck.  Saw 4 really big black snakes out.  Man I hate those things.  They scare the crap out of me.

fished it sat afternoon.  tons of pollen and moss.  i think all the moss is caused by how many lawns are near the watershed...  but i think aranbp is right that with all this rain the stream will be a bit back to normal in a few days.   could have done without the report on the snakes though!!!!!     i saw a few when we were stocking a few weeks ago!

The green stuff choking the stream isn't moss; its algae and its caused by too many nutrients (mostly phosphorous, nitrogen, organics) getting into the stream. Comes from many sources; including the sewage plants on Piney Fork and Lick Run, from excess fertilizer running off of peoples lawns, from abandoned mine drainage, and others. The Peters Creek Watershed Association recently received a grant form PA DEP to do an assessment of all streams in the watershed. This assessment will include chemical and biological analysis; we'll be doing fish surveys and we'll attempt to better understand this algae problem and hopefully come up with some ideas on how to make it less of a problem in the future.

Leptodia, thats great to hear of the future assesment. Razmatazz05, how could i forget about the pollen also!!! Man my brother in law even commented, "It's like it's snowing" Man that crap was coming down wasn't it!!! Between the pollen showers & the infestation of the algae, that creek was hard to fish.

Ok, time to stir this post some, been rather quiet. Has anybody been up to peters? and if so, hows it holding up? might be "finally" going up this weekend.

There were 2 stockings of Peters on Friday. The 6th graders at South Park Middle School stocked about 70 2-4 inch fingerling Brownies into Peters at Greenmans as part of their "Trout in the Classroom" program on Friday morning. They raise the trout from eggs in their classroom. The entire 6th grade comes for the stocking and learn about fly fishing, stream habitats, water quality and macroinvertebrates. Its a great program. We're trying to get one started at Pleasant Hills Middle School next year.
Lots of bigger than usual fish in the stocking yesterday.

Wen't upstream from gill hallroad bridge, once we heard of the kids derby from the guys at shad-rap, no disrespect or nothing (as it is a great thing for the kids & to get em into the sport at a young age) but it being the 1st trip upto the stream in a month, me & my brother in law sought out a more peaceful fishable section of the stream, hence we wen't further upstream, it was actually benificial, we found a "absolutely beautiful stretch", i myself only caught 2 carp & my brother in law 1 half-decent brownie, had some nice hittin going on though. As far as excitement, we had some guys dog come barreling down a very steep hillside & once it realized it could'nt stop the dog proceeded to do a swan dive into the creek (lol) 2 young kids came along & asked us if we lost a cellphone (which we did'nt) and they said they each caught a "brook trout" (most likely they each caught a brownie) as i've never ever known of peters having brookies in it.

Wen't again this past thursday, started up above on piney fork (spot that we found the previous trip) although still very nice, the bugs were insane up there, even after using insect repellent, another guy was there for a lil while & seen him catch 1 half-decent sheephead, but he told us he did'nt get any trout & his fishing was slow. We gave it about 2-2 1/2 hrs up in this area with barely a nibble. We decided to go back downstream to our "ole faithful stretch, where i caught a nice plump 12-13 inch rainbow as soon as my line hit the water, ended up catching another sub-par decent rainbow & a sucker (all on redworms) But after about an hour of pretty consistent action the bite died down to nothing, my brother in law got skunked.

How's the creek?
Have not been down for a couple weeks.  Last time bugs were real bad and only folks out were going after carp with bread.

It has been good. I've been doing well on rainbows with wooley buggers in gold body and black tail, weighted to get down deep in fast bends. The carp are killing me though. They just sit there and mock my attempts at catching them.

An ample dousing with bug repellant has helped with the mosquitos.

I saw a couple of very suspicious looking snakes too. Markings and size of adult copperhead. Head was slightly arrow headed, wider at the back on top. I couldn't catch one to make a posative id, cause it came by from behind me and we scared the bajeezus out of eachother.

There was also a gazillion little fry of some sort. Shallow little pockets with hundreds of them, all over the place.

There are definitely Copperheads in the Peters Creek Valley.

Wanted to let the folks who enjoy fishing Peters Creek and Piney Fork Run know that Allegheny County is considering strip mining 100 acres in the Sleepy Hollow valley in South Park County Park. Sleepy Hollow Run is a major tributary to Piney Fork. This will definitely have a negative effect on water quality in Piney Fork and Peters Creek and will pretty much ruin Sleepy Hollow Run and that great little wooded valley.
There was an article about it in todays Post Gazette: http://www.post-gazette.com/pg/08163/888924-113.stm
Some of us from the Tri-Community Anglers and Peters Creek Watershed Association are going to the meeting on Saturday to let them know that we don't think this is a good idea. Hope some of you guys can make it as well.

I was wondering what the survey stakes and flags were about when I was there for morels. That region is some of my favorite gathering grounds for a wide variety of shrooms.

I'll see ya saturday. Thanks for the alert.

Wen't up there this past wenseday, not so good, stream was just a hair down from where i like it (depth-wise) and after say 2 hrs at least, my brother in law caught a rainbow on of all things, "doughball" He pretty much hit it instantaneously, i could'nt believe it, i thought for sure he had a carp, sheephead or even a cat. Not too long after that he lucked out n got a half-decent brownie (on a minnow) I did'nt get crap myself, got disgusted & wen't downstream to the next nice hole, nothing there as well, decided right b4 we left to try a fast water hole that we've pulled some outta through the years, and would'nt ya know, i LOST 1 heck of a big, plump rainbow, i wen't back n baited up & came back after him, i did manage to get 1 decent rainbow outta the hole, but never did end up seeing that bruiser again, all in all, not a very good day. about5-6 hrs of fishing and only 3 fish between us, but, at least the 3 were all trout, and not bad sized ones at that.

The last 2 trips were'nt all that bad (did'nt get any trout), last week creek was still up a tad & the small stream smallmouths were on a tear, pulled 5 outta 1 hole all on minnows, my brother-in-law managed 2 himself plus he did manage to catch a trout (a smaller one) outta a fast water hole. We wen't again yesterday (YES WE WERE IN THE WOODS DURING THOSE SEVERAL MONSOON STYLE DOWNPOURS!!!) we wen't above up around saunders station area & again did'nt do too bad (especially considering the conditions) My brother-in-law caught like 4-5 small bullheads & 1 small carp & after a very slow start things started heating up for me also, i caught 3 bullheads & had a nice size carp break off, the last 2 bullheads were of very, very nice size, 1st one was about maybe 10 inches & the 2nd one was even nicer, he was probably about 11-12 inches & both were fat (they both nailed minnows) & were a joy on micro-light tackle. The creek was swelling big time though when we finally left.

It is the creek where 43 crosses rt 51.  Down in large.  Take 51 to Old clairton rd.  If you are traveling north the road is on your left.  Turn left.  Make very next left tune.  This is Oak rd.  Turn left onto 1st st. This turns into peters creek road.  The creek follows the road.  I can send you better directions if you need them.  Pm me.

Was up the creek today, tried at least 5-6 holes, a few that i have'nt tried in yrs (and was pleasently surprised by some of the holes i hadn't fished in yrs) alas it wasn't from what i caught outta them, as it was next to nothing. It was just nice to see how some of these holes "improved" as far as depth, structure, etc, etc. Although temperaturewise they said it wasn't that hot 2day, well lemme tell ya, directly out in the sun, IT WAS HOT. And although fished some nice deep holes, because of the sun being so bright & humid & hot the fish just weren't cooperating. My brother in law managed 2 small carp & 2 small bass, myself just 1 lost nice sized carp & although a tad on the small size, something thats very rare up on peters creek, but can be found in certain holes, a small largemouth.

Through the years i have caught trout, carp, suckers, creekchubs, bullheads, smallmouth & (very rarely) largemouth, hybrid stripers (only last yr), sauger (also only last yr) & even moreso occasionally, bluegills. Mainly though, the bulk of my catches through the yrs have trout, carp, smallmouth bass, bullheads, & suckers. The rest of em seem to be like "bonus catches" if you will, only occasionally, hope this further helps you out bud.
