I remember seeing a post a while ago talking about decent places to take a kid for panfish near the east side of town - I live in Forest Hills.  Something maybe like Highland Park maybe?  But it looks like we only keep 3 pages of post here for history.

I want to take my little guy on his first trip and was hoping for something closer than North Park.

Thanks in advance!

there were numerous posts on different areas.  panther hollow and highland park, highland park dam, even the north side (up by the redeveloped island), by the point, by the stadiums, (there's a real nice area with a dock down by the old western pa penitentiary).   change your search in upper right hand side to go back further into the year. you can go back for 365 days and you will find a ton of info.

Thanks - Yeah I felt pretty stupid when I realized how to change the search.

We went to Panther Hollow on Sat. caught a few REALLY small gills, could barley even hook them.  We certainly got some looks from the locals, but I didn't care, the boy had some fun.

Where is the old western pa penitentiary?

As fas as just getting a kid into some panfish Highland Park pond is the best choice. You'll find a few nice sized 'gills in the mix, some guys put the bass they catch in the river into the pond, and there are carp. It's easy to fish and the kid'll get something fun.

Thanks.  I might try Highland Park Pond this weekend with him.  I took a peek at an online map - looks like there are several ponds there?  Make any difference which one we go to?

Looks like I can just shoot up Rt. 8 a bit and it about runs into it?

clusty (web hunter of CMU) map to
3001 Beaver Ave, Pittsburgh, PA 15233.  fishing pier is on one of the side streets (I think doeer on the east side of the penn).  Did you try highland park dam also for fishing?  May be able to tie into some bigger things.  Entrance is at end of washington blvd.  go straight at end of Washington and make left to dam.  You're on top of the dam and can fish off the wall.  usually a few old timers there fishing for cats and some bass.  You can also fish off the north side down by the stadiums,  on the south side down by Pitt's practice fields, and a bunch of other spots.  Tune in here and you'll hear a lot.

The pond is actually inside Highland Park, next to the swimming pool. If you take route 8 (or 28) to the Highland Park Bridge and after crossing take the first exit and then the next left, this will take you through the zoo. Follow to where you either have to go straight or make a very sharp right. At this point you want to go straight and just follow that road until to reach the pond which will be immediately adjacent to the pool, and both will be on your right side.

I was going to put up a picture of my boy with a bluegill to thank you all for the tips, but I can't find the link to the post that explains how to put pictures up.
