From the Tribune Review

There is a picture of him and the fish in the paper.

By Bob Frye

Sunday, April 20, 2008

Joe Hutchinson knew something was up when the "log" he thought he had snagged started moving.
Hutchinson, who lives in Indiana County, was fishing Little Mahoning Creek on the first day of trout season. He and a friend had driven up Friday night, as they always do, in their camper.
A peek at the stream that evening revealed some nice golden rainbow trout -- commonly known as palominos -- in the water.
"We saw one really nice one in there," Hutchinson said. "We knew it was big. We just didn't know how big."

                                                                                                                                     They found out.
Hutchinson fished all morning without landing a trout. At about 1:30 in the afternoon, though, when some other fishermen cleared out, he crossed the stream to fish in the area where he had seen the big golden the night before.
Within five minutes, he had hooked that fish, his "log."
"When it topped the water, holy cow, did it roll," Hutchinson said. "Then it started swimming toward me, so I had to reel really fast. That was good, though, because I was only using 4-pound test."
Hutchinson landed the fish, then took it to Keystone Bait and Tackle in Shelocta to have it weighed.
"It was a beautiful fish. But I don't have certified scales, so I sent him to Goodman's," said Pam Warr.
Mike Goodman of Goodman's Bait and Tackle in Ford City weighed and measured the fish. He preliminarily pegged the fish at 31 1/2 inches long, with a 19 1/2-inch girth. It weighed 13.75 pounds.
Because that is heavier than the existing state record -- an 11-pound, 10-ounce fish pulled from Lake Erie by Greensburg angler R.W. Hafer in 1986 -- Hutchinson contacted the Pennsylvania Fish and Boat Commission.
Waterways conservation officer Matt Sodmont took the fish and officially weighed and measured it Monday. It had shrunk a little -- to 30 1/2 inches long and 13 pounds, 4 ounces -- but it's still poised to become a new record.
"I knew it was big when we stocked it, but I didn't think it was quite that big," said Sodmont. "I thought it had a chance to be a record, but I didn't think it would be that much heavier."
The fish is not officially a new record just yet. There's a review process Hutchinson's application must go through, said Emil Svetahor, manager of the commission's southwest region office.
"It's a big one, for sure, but until Harrisburg does its thing, it's still just a possible record," Svetahor said.
Ironically enough, another angler fishing in southeastern Pennsylvania caught a 12-pound golden rainbow March 29 when trout season opened in 18 counties there. He applied for the record, too.
Now, though, before the review of his catch has even been completed, it seems Hutchinson's fish is poised to pass it.
Hutchinson mailed his record application Friday. It will likely take a few weeks to anoint him the record holder, Svetahor said.
In the meantime, Hutchinson is looking for a taxidermist to help him get the fish mounted. And he's still enjoying his catch.
"I'm as high as a kite right now," he said.

Congrats , why I'm not a big fan of the stockies, this fish swam around in a fish tank only to out swim the others to capture pellets before other trout can, doesnt even develope survival skills as its cousins and other breeds of fish, sits in this tank till he is huge like a fattened gobbler waiting for the axe, just to be dumped in a body of water and the first time it is interested in food to be yanked out and called a state record, no offense...I'd rather catch a 12 inch crappie then this fish...trust me I'm not jealous, just giving my opinion...

Sounds like a great fish, but I'm not really in favor of rewarding someone for catching a fish that was stocked as a state record...  I'm more disappointed that the state actually put it in the creek, they should of weighed that one and put him in an aquarium.  Nothing like handing out a record.

Don't get me wrong, I'd be giddy as a little kid in a candy store if I caught it, but still, it was stocked as a record.

You know I don't understand why the second someone posts somehting about a trout being big all you pro anglers here are so quick to dismiss it as a gimme and that this guy didn't accomplish crap. I wish I had caught that fish stocked or not. Hell I'd like to catch it out of a swimming pool for that matter. Just suck it up and ignore these posts if you don't like it.

To chime in I agree completely that this guy still landed this big fish and if the state wants to keep records than he beat the record.  Stocked or not landing that fish was no gimme for anyone.  Should they asterisk it because it was stocked?  I dont know but still a nice catch.  I dont do stream trout that often probably because I dont like to fish for something that was in a tank 2 weeks ago but many do and I think anyone, myself included, would have love to have hooked into it.  I dont think the guy is going to tell stories about it being some natural trout in the wild....everyone in pa knows about the golden rainbows they put in.  What some of us may find more rewarding takes nothing away from this fish.  It was put in to be caught, and he caught it.  What I personally like about steelhead is that they are very small when put in, go out to the lake, and come back a few years later.  Little more of a wild creature on the end of the line, but it was still put there to be caught.  And the 13 lb steelhead Ive caught arent in the record books like that golden rainbow will be.

You know one way or another any big fish talked about on this site will have something negative said about it or the guy who caught it, the way it was caught, where, and etc, etc, etc.  Thats why I dont post my trophy pics anymore.  The worst case of penis envy (fishing variety) is right here on fisherie.

i'm happy as heck for the person that caught it and imo it would be awesome to catch a state record.

not taking anything away from the persons catch and it was probably a challenge to catch, but the PFBC stocking a state record fish into a small body of water that is going to get fished hard doesnt seem right. imo a state record is a prestigious award. whats next, state record walleye or musky stocked in pine creek?

Centerpin,
Agreed and even though I wasnt one saying anything negative about this I for one would most definitely be bragging, and would have definitely roped it.  Would make a nice pic, then I'd let my gourmet chef of a mother in law invite 20 people over for a dinner party.  There'd be nothing left but a platter of bones and 15 empty wine bottles as usual.

Eh, it was stocked a record.  A fish was placed in that creek no more than a month ago that size, doesn't really do anything for me.  Had it been from a lake or a fish that had been stocked smaller and grew to that size, I'd be all about it.  The fact the commision stocked a fish that size just kinda bugs me, that's all.  Hell, I'd be doing the same thing if I was this guy.

I caught this one in Brokenstraw about 10 years ago. It was 30" and weighed 10 pounds 11 ounces. Just missed the state record. The fish was weighed at the hatchery before it was released. It weighed 13 pounds 6 ounces. The fish was loosing about a pound a week with out its daily pellet intake..Sure did make a beautiful mount.

A few years ago someone caught a very large trout out of donegal lake. If i remember right the officials from the pfc thought it was actually caught somewhere at seven springs. One of the pfc's comments at the time was "we don't stock record fish" or something very similar to that. I quess they change their story to suit the circumstances just like all the wonderful politicians that want to help us so much if elected.

pro.......me not hardly, just voicing my opinion, maybe next time they have one this size they could get you to the hatchery, and catch it straight from the tanks, if conditions wouldnt be too brutal for you, and if you don't like my posts expressing my opinions you should ignore them also, if anything its nice to see the fish commission stocking larger fish, all I was saying was I...stressing the word I ,as in me, dont like fishing for stockies and calling them state records, sorry to offend

I just like to catch fish period and I go where I think I can catch them. Stocked trout areas are plentiful in our state and this just shows contrary to popular belief how good of a stocking program our state has and that it is heading in the right direction.
