boy I have been to tourist traps but this weekend was the biggest ever. went to Ontario Canada to check out the Niagra Falls. my advice, avoid that area unless you plan on spending about a grand for the weekend. Stayed at a Mariot overlooking the falls, Price tag was $300.00 per nite add on the $20.00 per day to park at the hotel. Went to a place called Skylon. This tall relvoving (space needle) eatery. For 2 of us to eat steak there with 3 drinks , no salad or soup just prime rib, cost us $183.00.. holy crap, and thats exactly where the steak went 1/2 hr later. Lobster Tail was $83.00 (no I don't like lobster that much)
Every thing was big bucks, a TGIF was $25.00 burgers.
The falls itself, well looked like a big water fall, big whip.
Gas in Ontario was $9.00 a liter or gallon I didn't stop to look but seen the big price tag..

Best part of the weekend, stopped in Brockport and swung some flies in the Sandy Creek... No fish but didn't cost a dime...

Yeah- Niagara pretty much blows...

I betcha' didn't know it has ALWAYS sucked!?! Truth is, one of the primary reasons for establishing Yellowstone as the nations first National Park was the fact that early ecologists did not want to risk Yellowstone becoming the "eye sore" that Niagara Falls had become (and this was 1872!)...

What a shame it is worse than ever these days.

It would be better if they would let you troll spoons off "The Maid Of The Mist"...

I would have to think there are some pretty sweet trout under those falls!

You missed the best attractions in the entire area..............the strip joints on the canadian side!!

They have the best looking strippers i've ever seen and they are way into their job...at least they were 20 years ago when we used to go!

With relatives in Niagra Falls, I've been there alot, you've got to avoid eating there. Ride back over and eat on Grand Island, Lewiston or Tonawanda.

anyway, here are my favorite parts of the falls;

1. the falls view from Canada (free!)

2. the schoelkopf museum

3. niagra whirlpool cable car (scary!)

4. Ripley's believe it or not museum

I went a few years back, well probably 5 or so. It was ok at best. The falls are a sight but after the initial awesomeness of the power of the water its just another thing. The Maid of the Mist was cool, the line for it however sucked. It seemed like evrything was ok but not worth the wait. Oh well at least I didnt have to buy a passport to be dissappointed :)

U.S. Passport Card

Purpose
The new wallet-size U.S. Passport Card is a travel document that can be used to enter the United States from Canada, Mexico, the Caribbean, and Bermuda at land border crossings or sea ports-of-entry. Note that it cannot be used for international air travel. The passport card is more convenient and less expensive than a passport book.

Validity and Cost
The U.S. Passport Card has the same period of validity as the U.S. Passport Book: 10 years for an adult and 5 years for minors under age 16. The card costs $45 for a first-time adult passport applicant and $35 for all minor applicants under age 16, regardless of whether they are previous passport book or card holders. Adults who already have a fully valid passport book may apply for the card as a passport renewal by mail for a cost of only $20.

How to Apply
U.S. citizens, whether or not they have a passport book, may apply for a passport card. Note that passport cards cannot be shipped using overnight delivery. All passport cards will be returned using First Class Mail.

If you currently have or previously had a U.S. passport book, you might be able to apply for a passport card by mail. Note that in this scenario you will use a passport renewal form (DS-82) even if you're applying for your first passport card.

If you have never had a passport book, or you do not meet the requirements to apply by mail using Form DS-82, you may apply for a passport card in person using Form DS-11.

Various groups [ AAA and others ]offer 2-3 day packages that are excellent as far as price . Even in the most inexpensive ones , around $150 , you can eat at the Skylon , get breakfast vouchers at places like Denny's , get supper vouchers and other things . Granted , your hotel isn't 4 star , but rooms are clean . I've taken my family of 3 for several years and we didn't spend more than $200 . This did not include gas or VISA , etc . Just the room and meal vouchers . Niagra Falls can easily get expensive quick ,especially if you go to Clifton Hill , but a person does have a fair amount of control on that . Clifton is a neat place to go if you've never been there and it's a ton of fun for kids , but it is a tourist trap . You have to pick and choose what you want to do most there , but it is a lot of fun . From your letter , it sounds like this was your first time .

Buffalo Entertainment book has a lot of buy one get one free coupons for Niagara Falls.
I used them at Sklylon Tower for dinner, Ripley's, Criminal Hall of Fame(someone stole Hitler the same weekend I was there but different day)
A steak house just past the boxers restaurant on the street to the left at the top of Clifton Hill had had very good food.
Back on the American side Scotch and Sirloin has great steaks.
These are also in the book.

Tuna - What you might think about next time is looking online for b and b's in Lewiston or Youngstown and take a day trip to Canada to look at the Falls. There really is alot more to see in that area ( on the USA side ) than water. Just my 2 cents.
