Have a chance to go on a charter next weekend (8/15-8/16).  Is this a good time of year for walleye and SMouth?  Thinkin that they will all be pretty deep.  For the eyes no big deal cause we are keepin them but I've heard that catch and release smouth fishin is bad when they are deep cuz the air bladder over inflates when u bring them up and survival rate is low.  Not fun for me..

This is not a planned trip for me and im just a last minute inclusion so if the reply is "go some other time" i wont be upset.

Thanks in advance to all

I don't really know.. but from all the reports I've been hearing about the walleye fishing right now, I'd say go for it and have a great time.

If deep water (20'+) smallies are immediately returned, they will swim back down with no problems.  The only time you need to fizz them is when they are in the livewell for any length of time.

I've never had to fizz a fish... but is that where you poke it with a needle to let the air out of the swim bladder? Is there a certian place this should be done at on the fish? Ex... above/in front of the anus?

Here's a bassmaster article on the procedure.

Top pic shows traditional insertion point.  I prefer to go through the mouth.  Needles stay sharper much longer and you don't have to poke through so much flesh.

I get my needles at tractor supply (1.5" 18ga.)

Bladders wont pop out from fish from under 35ft water. I've taken plenty of smallies from 20 something feet and released them with no problem. Go fishing and enjoy yourself. Dont worry, be happy.

About the air bladder, when I'm fishing for the "eyes" sometimes I land a steelhead. I do not eat these fish so I release them, only to leave them belly up for the seagulls. After this happened a couple times I decided to keep them and find somebody to give them to. Would you use the same method for the air bladder on a steelhead?

I would have saved some of the smaller perch caught last week with this method but with my luck  I would get caught with a needle and syringe on the lake, without a prescription and spent time in the erie jail instead of on the lake.  We kept them instead but this raises the question what if you catch a fish that is not of legal length.  Does it just die.  I tried pushing the bladder back down through the gullet (the perch clearly had the bladder out of the mouth though) with little to no luck and a lot of bleeding!  This was a new concept for some shallow, inland boys to grasp and we were about half embarrassed to ask about it.

Actually that's not the air bladder, it's the stomach.  The bladder pushed the stomach out the perch's mouth.  Not sure if there's anything that can be done at that point?
