I met some cool guys down at the access of Elk this past weekend who were putting on quite a clinic on the steelhead.  The kicker is, they weren't using fancy centerpins, fly rods or top dollar equipment to put on their show.  What was their weapons of choice?  None other than the old Mitchell 300s with some old noodle rods and they seemed to be having a ball.  As the morning went on, two centerpinners moved in and acrossed on them thinking they might show these guys up.  The pinners were casting right to the other side pretty much at their feet.  I watched Mitchell 1 return the favor and actually catch a fish about five feet in front of the pinner!  It was great and I wish I had my video camera with me.  After about the third fish hooked in front of one of the pinners, Pro pinner 1 and 2 proceeded to start casting about 5 feet out trying to catch fish.  Well, long story short, the Mitchell guys caught about 12 fish to the pinner's 1 in about a half hour.  They got frustrated and left after crossing lines with about 3 different people.  I could only imagine what was going on in their heads as they stormed off into the wild blue yonder..."I spent hundreds of dollars on all this fancy equipment, and these guys come in here and hammer fish with their old junky rods and reels!"  Some spectical and it goes to show, as I read in a previous thread, how its not what you use that counts, but how you use it.  Cuddos to the Mitchell guys!!  Great to see some "Old School" boyz showing them how to get er done.

When I'm in Alaska again this year I'll be crying every night as I polish my fancy fly rod and reel and think about how I could be the king of the Elk Creek Access with my dad's old Mitchell.

yeah really, who cares.  Some ppl do buy equipment too expensive to suck so bad, but once they learn to use it then they really look bad ass. So u came across some good fisherman, maybe someday u'll become one too.  Seems like u were doing more watching than catching?

Anyone who has had the misfortune of encountering a well-outfitted angler who lacks any courtesy in respecting the space of other anglers would have taken great pleasure in reading of this occurence.  I know I did.

I think there was a tag on my Orvis vest that indicated that flannel clad hillbillies must leave the hole when I approach.

MackJ - Been there and done that both ways. Good post. Nice to have some old goats with standard fishing gear doing there thing. Huuummmm! I'm one of those old goats with old gear sometimes. More power to them. Proves it's the man with the pole that makes the difference.

Sometimes it's if you are on the fish and have the right drift. My buddy and I have done this many times. Fishing 20-30 feet apart and one of us is spanking them while the other just drowns bait. That's why it's called fishing and that's part of the challenge of doing it.

Just to clarify, I have found many well-outfitted anglers who know proper stream manners and those of less expensive taste who do so too.  But, I will confess that seeing the discourteous angler who is well-outfitted get his comeuppetence is slightly more pleasurable.

Anadromous, if you're wearing RealTree camo under thew sling pack then it cancels it out.

If you're wearing RealTree camo with a Steelers logo on it then I hear you can actually walk on the water on Erie tribs.

I can only imagine what that means if you have a Browns logo on it

Visor has been with me on many a trip.......it stays, freak or no freak. Besides it was 87 degrees at the one fly contest. I didn't want my hair going flat due to humidity.

Thats probabaly not the only thing you'll be polishing if you go to AK and worry about how dirty your gear is. The locals should be real impressed with your gear, maybe they'll even ask for an autograph.

I don't get it Roy. What else will I be polishing? Consideering the average local where I go is a brown bear I don't think there will be many autograph requests. I'll catch a couple trophies for you though

My thoughts EXACTLY when I read that post Roy. I had a client this year who grew up along the Kenai, moved away when he was 16. He claimed he hadn't been back to Alaska since. My guess he's now around 60, give or take a few years. Anyways, I had him fishing the "braids" region near the confluence of our river, fly fishing for rainbows. He was using his own articulated bunny hair leech patterns that were no joke about 6" long, an old school eagle-claw fly rod, and an old Remington reel, my guess they were both from the late 70's. The day was a total ropefest of fatty leopard rainbows. It was all the little things about him that impressed me though, tons of skill.

Long story short, it doesnt matter what gear the man is using, just what man is using that gear!

Im sort of curious, what part of the state are you working in steelstalker?

Wow you guys with the orvis vest will like this !! I wear an ORVIS vest and a Flannel shirt. The large zip pocket on my right side is the "SACRED SKEIN" pocket. Theres no mistake about it with all the dried caked on skein residue embedded in the tightly woven fabric and glued to the zipper !! And in the upper left outside pocket is the unforgetable stain from when my egg canister leaked all of its juices. Can't beat an ORVIS !! LOL

I'll second that. I own a few Orvis items including my current slingpack which is covered in egg goop and rotten dead minnow scent. I actually had to make the 40 minute drive to the lake with the windows down three weeks ago (and yes I showered that day).

I think I can attest to that one Uncle Roy!  I could smell you at the end of the tubes that weekend as the stench was wofting down all morning.  I sure hope you got that thing dry cleaned since then!

MackJ, I know where your coming from....I can certainly appreciate a guy catching fish on whatever and with whatever, but the guys with all the fancy equipment along with all thier ignorance is what really cracks me up.  Beginning to see more and more of them on the streams lately...damn shame.
