Thinking about a raft trip on the Yough.
It would only be my son (20 yrs. Old) and myself.

Any suggestions or advice would be appreciated.
Lower, middle, upper?
Any favorite outfitters?

Thanks in advance.

a girlfriend and i took a 2 man shreader down the river unguided. we were 19 and had zero white water expierence.  long story short, she was terrified and crying and i was wishing i forked out the extra 50 bucks for a guided trip.  it got pretty harry in a bunch of places.

If you are going for whitewater, just go to Ohioplye state park there and rent something and go yourself.   In August the water levels are low and the rapids arent bad.

The guided tours are a bunch of nazis.  They make everyone stay single file and paddle the whole way down the river.  There is no time for relaxing or pulling over to jimp off of rocks or swim.  It always looked a lot more like work to me then fun.

I have been down the river about 20 times between the ages of 16 and 30.  Every time it was just me and some friends and we always had a blast.  No guides, no horror stories.   Although once we went early in the spring and the water levels were high, cold, and wicked.  The rapids were class 5 and kicked our asses.  Not much fun that trip.

I'd go with Hazelbakers and shoot for the mid Yough, there is some real nice fishing on this part, if you do decide to rent from outfitters in Ohiopyle, avoid renting a super duct, we got them last year the bottom is flat like a mattress, your basically out of control unless your always paddling to keep the darn thing straight, and we have made the trip before on kayaks

We went on the trip from confluence to ohiopyle once and also the trip from ohiopyle down stream. If you want a relaxing trip where you can fish, swim etc. i'd take the trip from confluence down. We went with an ohiopyle outfitter who bused up upstream from ohiopyle to confluence then we rafted down. I don't remember which outfit it was but if you take the early trip you have all day to get back. Water does get low at some spots in the summer though

Also took the guided trip down from ohiopyle thru the whitewater on a 6 man raft. Great time we will got dumped.

From what i hear if you want a real scary ride raft the upper yough in the spring in maryland. I believe that trip must be guided.
