I float beadhead pheasant tail nymphs on my noodle rod to change it up and it accounts for a few fish every time.  If I didn't get bored of drift fishing I would use only that.

I wish I could narrow it down to just 10 lures/baits/flies. My back would feel so much better.

Gentlemen,
My grandson is tying up something called an "easy craw"  Looks like a crawfish swimming backward!  really deadly on smallies and panfish.  Might work for steel too.

Cold,
Since I have dial-up it would take about a week for me to upload 1 picture so that's out.  I'll try to send you a e-mail describing it.

Jack, I used to tie something similar for smallmouth. One day on the tribs I gave it a try up on a small trib. Water was clear and I could see some fish cruising around a decent sized hole. The fly got a lot of looks but no takes. I let the fly drift down and around an eddy. The fly came to rest on a leaf pile. Steelhead swam over and inhaled the fly. I ended up getting two more fish. Both took it when the fly came to rest on the creek bottom. That's the first and only time I used a crawdad for steel.

If you ever need crystal flash in red and can't find. I buy mine at a craft store, its not quite as heavy as the fly tying version, but it works just fine.
Its like a $1.50 for a bag and it will last you years. I also buy my crystal braid for crystal spawn there in white and use Rit dye to color it. Plus little 5 mm pom poms in white and dye them for egg patterns. Just slide them on the hook, add a litlle super glue and your done, want a blood dot, get a red sharpie...  For cheap moe eggs patterns, I use the soft air BB's in various colors, you  can get like 1000 of them for 6 bucks. heat up the hook and press it in and your done.  Also this sounds even more low tech, kids toys that rattle, all have litlle colored plastic beads in them. I pick up a few rattles or whatever at yard sales for like a quater and take them apart. You can find some odd colored beads in there that you don't usally see.

Jeb,
I buy my bead heads and my angora from craft stores but disassembling yardsale Mattel products is a bit of a reach for me... I must admit I have taken some hair from several dolls, unicorns and other such easy pickings that lay around the rack...

Size 10 Peach colored sucker spawn.  This year I'm gonna put a beadhead on them instead of weighting them with lead.  Looks easier, might even try a copper, silver or gold cone head.
