Hopefully he ate the honey after he used Roach bombs on them. Why not find someone who'll save the hive?
No sense in being stupid unless you show it!

I hope that the only reason he didn't have them removed by an apiarist was because he couldnt get an ID on them without risking his hide or his family.  OR if any family member had an allergy to them.

Still, if the queen did escape unscathed with a half-dozen or so of her brood, they'll be up and running again.  Most species of honeybees are fairly tenacious if they're not decimated by parasite.

Honestly, though, I have trouble blaming the guy.  If it had been a paper nest under there full of whiteface hornets, he'd be lucky to avoid a trip to the ER.

HORNETS! That brings back some bad memories! Amazing how far they'll chase you after you rip a hole in the side of their nest with the tractor exhaust!

He must not have used that BBQ for quite some time.  Sorry to see so many honey bees killed.  We need  all of them we can get.

I never let my grill go that long unused but still, if I had a family to worry about I'd have wiped them out too. Nice to able to call somebody but sometimes you just gotta deal with things. Like the Groundhogs that used to destroy my garden each year. Used to.

Shame losing the honey though.

I sure as hell wouldn't be eating the honey if I roach bombed the nest!

Cant blame the guy, tho.  Although I will say, we dont leave our BBQ outside all year long for just that type of reason.  But it did look like he lived somewhere that you could BBQ all year round.

Cool pics!

Ok people! Educate me on the importance of honey bees! What benefits do they have?

Well without them cross polinating all our crops we would not have any food throughout the world and we would all die .

Yup, last time I checked we weren't having any trouble cross polinating meat!

Honey bees are way more important than most people think.

  • Bees have 5 eyes
  • Bees fly about 20 mph
  • Bees are insects, so they have 6 legs
  • Male bees in the hive are called drones
  • Female bees in the hive (except the queen) are called worker bees
  • Losing its stinger will cause a bee to die
  • Bees have been here around 30 million years!
  • Bees carry pollen on their hind legs called a pollen basket or corbicula
  • An average beehive can hold around 50,000 bees
  • Foragers must collect nectar from about 2 million flowers to make 1 pound of honey.
  • The average forager makes about 1/12 th of a teaspoon of honey in her lifetime.
  • Average per capita honey consumption in the US is 1.3 pounds.
  • Bees have 2 pairs of wings.
  • The principal form of communication among honey bees is through chemicals called pheromones.
  • Bees are important because they pollinate approximately 130 agricultural crops in the US including fruit, fiber, nut, and vegetable crops. Bee pollination adds approximately 14 billion dollars annually to improved crop yield and quality.

We have a large garage that has been vacant for years but are in the process of restoring. We hired a contractor to put on a new roof and he ran into some bees and decided to go ahead and spray. Unfortunately, he found out after the fact that they were honey bees and wiped them all out. We took the combs and set them in a box outside and within minutes more bees from elsewhere where all over. We smoked them out so they wouldn't get poisoned. Its just good to know that there are more near. Just sucks that he sprayed them before we knew that they were honey bees.
