Imagine that!

after some questions about fishing around Erie on both www.WVAngler.com and steelheadsite.com, many answers came back that directed me to this site....

A little about me: I am an avid fly-fisherman, but still enjoy to break out the spinning rod once in a blue moon...  I am married and we are expecting the birth of our first child (it's a boy!!!) come December...  My screen name is the same as it is on other boards: GreenWeenieWizard...  Fly-fishermen should get the joke since the fly is so faux pas...  hehehe...  I am also originally from Southern WV, but now reside in Parkersburg...  the warmwater fishing is great, but there isn't a cold creek for over an hour away from P-burg = blah!

so, after reading several posts and signing up as a member, I need to ask ya'll a question....

Right now, i have plans with the family to come up to Erie, PA the first weekend of October (3-5) to do some fishing...  I will be chasing after some chrome, but am interested in other fish as well...  We do not have the perch in WV that you guys do in Lake Erie, so we will also fish for them....

I have reserved a campsite at Lampe Marina and Campground, but know nothing about the area...  My questions are as follows:

Are there any eateries closeby to the campground?

What about a place to get a brew or two before turning in for the night??

How is the fishing off the South Pier that time of year???  and what should I look for - species wise??

Could I cast out a set-line at night and expect to catch some fish behind the campsite???  is so, what would I hook-up with???

How long of a drive is it to fish some of the tribs (just time values, you
don't have to give any stream locations)??

Is it a nice place to stay??  Or should I have picked a different location??

You will be within 30 Minutes of any stream in Erie County........

You can fish off of the South Pier just be prepared for some wind

Keep in mind that the campground in my opinion leaves a lot to be desired     Picture a parking lot   No trees that I am aware of

There are lots of restraunts within just a couple of miles....

And to add a bit about the fishing.....

The piers would be fine, but like said above, the wind will be an issue! The perch bite may or may not be good at that time (kinda hit or miss) But steelhead will be moving into the bay by then and will offer you an opportunity!

Places to eat and drink? Just about on every corner within 10 miles!

Casting into the lake may catch you a few, too! Steelhead move up and down the shorelines staging for a run!
Good luck!

Another option, is to take a Perch trip on one of the headboats (A)(B). Perch fishing can be still very hot at that time of year.

(A): Edward John
      Victory ( Capt Rick's )

(B): Both operate until mid October I believe. Both offer rod rental for a couple $'s if necessary. Same rates $30 per adult. Info on both can be found at the following links

No eateries really close, but many within a mile or two. Depends what you are looking for.

Pio's on East Ave. - that's first street  east of the Parkway, turn left
when you get to the Parkway light - is a family type neighborhood Italian
place, good pizza and pasta, and subs. Maybe a mile from Lampe.

Also on the East Side, turn left on East Lake Rd.(6th st) off East Ave., there is the Park Tavern, about 2 miles on the right, good bar, decent food. Also, another half mile or so, Bootleggers, also good bar, and decent
food.  Both are past GE, on East Lake Rd. (6th St).  uh - don't stop at
any other bars on the way.  You'll go past Ricardo's on the left, before
GE, food's not bad, not too expensive.  Rest., no bar.  Also,
Lighthouse Rest. at the light at 4 mile creek, breafast and lunch only,
pretty good food, reasonable.

Turn right at the light, you are a mile from State St.  Smuggler's Wharf at the dock is a little expensive, but good food. Turn right at State, to go to the dock. Several other places to eat between 2nd and 12th on State, also several bars.  Calamari's - 10th and State, and the Plymouth near there are both good bars and have decent food.  Marketplace Grill has good food, around 4th and State.. McD's at 5th and State. Burger King, 12th and French.  Any of the bars on State are pretty safe.

Quality Market - go through the light on Parkway, turn left at 6th St. - make immediate left into plaza.   DO NOT go to the bar that is on the
right at that turn. It's for, uh, locals.

Oh, I forgot to tell you, like Skip says, the campground kinda sucks.
You will be about a half mile downwind of the sewage plant,
and if the wind direction changes, less than a quarter mile west of a huge coke plant. The area down there is not considered safe at night.
If I were to camp there I would be armed. I haven't heard of any problems there, though. Yet.

I grew up less than a mile from there, and having a campground put there
had me roflmao. It's not the most scenic area on the bay.

Sorry.

You are though, equidistant from Walnut Creek, and 4 mile creek,
and not too far from 12mile creek and 20 mile creek. There is a bait shop
at the foot of East Ave. and also a good one on East Lake Rd. -
near Bootlegger's - right next to Partner's - a strip joint, byob.

Kirk at the bait shop on East Lake Rd. will give you directions, and let
you know if anything is happening in the east side creeks.

Not to be rude or anything like that, but for me the best eatin' food/boos & company is always at the campsite. Don't get any better than that for me anyways

thanks for all the info, FiveMilePete... that is exactly what i was looking for....

May end up changing places to stay now...  don't wanna be that close to a sewage plant, but the coke doesn't bother me...  I grew up in Southern WV... coke plants are everywhere down there...

thanks again!

I agree with Crappie!
Campfire dining is what camping is all about! Nothing like a dutch oven stew or steaks over the fire. Heck, even hotdogs taste great roasted over wood! And a beer wont cost you 4 bucks a wack!

Green Weenie Wizard,  First off... A big thank you for some of the help you have supplied on the other boards.  You personally have given me advice a couple of times regarding WV streams and never steered me astray.  I wish I could give you other species information, but at that time of year, I will be concentrating on Steelies along with most other people.  I can help you with the steelies as can many on here.  If you are interested, I will pm you with some useful information that you can use when you get there...  Tight Lines, Griffon.
